Every State has different laws.
I would suggest that you contact your State's version of Department of Natural Resources / Fish & Game Commission / etc and check what your regulations are.
It used to be that simple.
But now you also have to check County and City ordinances too.

I don't believe the state of NC requires permits for venomous snakes, however, your city or county might have local ordinances. You might find the contact info on this website useful.

Or conact the local dnr office. Take Care,Marty

I contacted the president of USARK, Mr. Andrew Wyatt, about a month ago to get up to date on what I could keep here in NC (I have been in the Middle East) he informed me that I can keep whatever I want as long as I use proper caging protocol as stated in the new legislation that to my knowledge, he helped write so... as far as I know, at this time there are no restrictions on what you can have in your possession in the state of North Carolina. I am just going off of what I was told and your profile that says you are in NC. Here is the link to the ammended state law from the USARK website entitled S307,Senator Edward Jones & USARK: http://www.usark.org/statelaws.php?state=NC
I would strongly recomend that you use this caging protocol no matter where you live.
