Personally, I enjoy the music. Stevie Ray keeping me company. As a guitar player, it keeps my mind focused I guess.
Here's the advice I give every new staff person under me. Two things to always keep in mind:
#1- It only takes an animal a second to do something you didn't expect. Whether it does it to itself, to a bystander....or to you. Always keep sharp and never place yourself in a position where you do not have full advantage. It happens in a second.
#2- If you feel as though something could go wrong....don't do it. Fix it, change it, repair it, whatever it takes. There is no worse feeling than to be standing there bleeding profusely, or to walk in on a dead animal and have to say to yourself "Damn, I knew that could happen; I should have done something then". Just take a moment and make it right.
To put it into perspective; I got a call a couple of years ago to come to the emergency room to see an employee of mine. He had his hand ripped open by a lioness. After he was stitched up I decided it was a good time to ask what happened. It seems as though he wanted to remove a cobweb from the enclosure and reached through the bars for it. He said he felt it was okay because the lion was about 15 feet away and seemingly uninterested. Wanting to smack him because I had just given him my famous lecture a couple weeks before, I asked a simple question. "So how long did it take the lion to get to you"?
His answer......."under a second".

When I worked at the Tulsa Zoo the zookeeper listened to death metal... It was almost scary watching him work with them, because he's crazy enough without the music.
Stay safe,
Jon
