Have any of you guys used wooden pallets to contruct snake cages, hides, or racks? We have several dozen here at work that will just end up being burned and it seems like I could use them for something...

I'd be worried about splinters... might be more trouble than it's worth. Still, if you must try, I'd be partial to the oak pallets, they'll be much stronger... heavier too! I don't recall ever seeing treated lumber used to make pallets.

I agree the oak would probably be a better quality. It is all rough-cut, & would require sanding before use, for sure. I have used the oak pallet wood for cooking outdoors. Great for smoking beef.

I've used oak pallets to make furniture. The hardest part is making sure you get the nails out before you run it throught the planer (a single nail can ruin a fairly expensive blade). If you have enough time to do it right furniture (and cages, I guess) made from pallet wood can be very striking. Sadly, it is MUCH easier to go to the lumber yard to buy the wood.

You need to consider what was on the pallet as well. Also, even if you know for sure what came off the pallet at the place you get them from, does not mean that there wasn't anything toxic on them before. Remember, pallets go all over the world, and can be loaded with everything from banana's to 50 gallon drums of benzine. That sed, nails were mentioned in another post. Pallets cost around $11.00 +- a piece so they get repaired allot, so be super careful of nails. That sed, I got my hands on 25 pallets made of teak (rose wood) that came from India. I will be using them for the exterior trim in my herp room. You also get some real nice burl in the Oak pallet boards.
