Yes according to reports about a long awaited study undertaken at the University of Florida. I haven't read it yet but it certainly looks promising.

I still don't agree that they are they same. I have caught both and the timbers come in many different colors phases, while the canebrake carries the same pattern other than from dark to light.

Should we as Humans be a ssp to chimps then? Just harrasing ya, DNA does matter, but other aspects should be considered for the full evaluation, isnt science based on all the evidence and then factored? Again, just razin ya man,

Actually, giving ourselves our own genus was rather pretentious but it was the height of pretentiousness to give ourselves subspecies of the only species as well (Homo sapiens sapiens). I believe that phylogenetic arrangements shoudl be made on DNA level decisions, not based upon personal interpretation of other factors.
For example, whales are given their own order but the DNA indicates that they should be in the same genus or at least a sister genus to that occupied by the Hippos. The granting of its own order due to 'special characteristics' is pretty hard to justify. We'd all enjoy watching an overweight martial arts movie titled 'Enter the Whippo' ;-p

My point is, science has had to correct for alot of errors in the past, and I think alot of emphasis is being placed on it when other factors could be considered since it is a relatively new science, and that encourages people to interpret that as the only way. Hippos and Whales, I see what ya mean, but cant you look at a hippo and see that it is much different than a whale, in habits, habitat, etc? Again, DNA is signigicant, never said it wasnt, but to say a NEW science is a sole determining factor is a little pretentious on the geneticists parts dont ya think? I mean, I like to be number one too but....:-p Always a good topic, those canes and timbers, later BG

Something to consider, is if anyone has ever bread canebrakes or
timbers has ever seen both in one brood from a seemingly pure couple?
Anyone? Or does anyone know if the two will interbreed in the wild?

You can interbred C. horridus horridus with C. horridus atricaudatus the canebrake phase seems to be more dominate in the offspring after having say a timber dad and a canebrake mother. Most of the offspring I have seen looked more like a canebrake. Hope this helps

DNA may prove how genetically similar they are, but don't forget about their habitat differences. There are also significant differences between venom compositions of the two subspecies, I mean, what were two subs. Also, take a look at the minute morphological differences in skull structure.
