I realize this is no topic, I just wanted to share. I caught my first timber of the year yesterday. she was pale pale green yellow with extremely light tan cross bands. stunning. I had her for an hour, taking pictures and basicaly teaching venomous herps of West Virginia 101 to a passing family. she never struck once. I found her coiled up on some leaves beside a fallen tree. it was perfect. good luck and use your head. chris

Congratulations Chris, I bet that was exciting. Here in Missouri, I haven't been fortunate enough to find a Timber yet, but I'm sure the day will come. I have had some luck recently too. Thursday I stumbled across two large Blue Racers breeding. I chased the female down a hole, and caught up with the male in a brush pile. Man was he big! And he liked to bite! I enjoy talking about field herping stories. Good herping--Anthony

I love field stories, so here's another one. My first copper this year. I was chasing after a skink which ran under a big rock. I stepped up on two ajoining rocks. I looked down between my feet and there was a big copper coiled up. hadn't even shed yet. Fiesty.

I have only found one Copperhead thus far this year, down in the Mark Twain National Forest. That's a lower number than usual, but I have more than made up for it in cool colubrids!
I'm still working on getting a camera. I can't believe I have went this long without one. Really, I think they are a must have. So no, I wasn't able to get pics of that big male racer. However, yesterday I took pics of big fat gravid female Midland Brown Snake, with someone elses camera. I traveled 50 miles to checkout an area that is said to have dolomite bluffs in which reptiles hide. However, I never found those due to a major lack of public access trails(probably due to recent storms). Along with the Brown Snake, I caught a big ground skink. I just have to go back and find those bluffs though! Anthony-MO

I've had pretty good luck so far this year, surprisingly. I say that because usually by now, I haven't caught much. I'll give a listing breakdown of what I've caught so far. NONVENS - 3 adult speckled kings and 1 very small juvie, 1 apparently gravid prairie king, 2 eastern hognoses (female apparently gravid), 2 adult black rats and 1 juvenile, 3 ringneck snakes, 1 black racer, and countless Nerodia (I have a mating congregation area near to where I live). VENS - 3 adult osage copperheads and 2 juvies that I've yet to ascertain whether they are osage or southerns. I've seen many DOR coppers, various colubrids, a very large western pigmy, and even one timber that absolutely broke my heart (it had been rednecked, missing its head and rattle). I live in West Central Arkansas and timbers are a pretty rare find around here, so you can imagine my upset to actually find one, dead, maybe a whole 10 miles from my house. Ah well, I've made it my biggest goal this year to find my first timber (and wild rattler, period), and I intend to keep it.

I've had good luck this year also. I've been out three days. The first turned up eight timber rattlesnakes(one of which had absolutely no rattle), one N. copperhead and a ~5'black rat. Day two turned up shorthead and eastern garters, and an E. massasauga. Day three turned up a black racer. Took slides of all. Good luchk with the rest of your field seasons.

I have been back in CA visiting my parents for the last week, and found 6 Northern Pacific's in about 3 hrs. There are some pics up in the field photos section. Five of them were right next to a golf course parking lot. Good Luck.
