There was a snake in my garage, it was making a hissing sound and there was a skunky smell. It was thick bodied around 3 or so ft. long and dark grey black, white underneath with some yellow under the head kinda on the side. I don't have much more detail about it. It was cornered and was striking quite a bit. Does anyone have any idea what kind of snake it may be? There were 2 more of then in my yard that same day. Was that skunky odor coming from the snake?
 Thanks,
 Cindy

Snakes do emit an odor from their anal gland. It is a defense mechanism and it is very musky(or skunky). This is what you may have smelled, however they are more apt to use this when really being hassled or handled. I guess this individual felt threatened enough by you to give it a try. ---Anthony

Cowgirl, Hi. I to live in Northern Mississippi, and the snake you had in your garage, could have been a few different snakes, non of whitch are venomous. sounds like a rat snake. and with the others in the yard the same day, more than likely one was a breeding female. the others were males after her. just my thoughts on it.

I betcha nickels to peanuts you had some sort of water snake. I have goofed with plenty of them and when they are harassed, they ALL seem to emit some nasty smell. Skunky. Its part of their defense mechanism, and if I were a predator, I would definitely reconsider after a nose full of that mess!

I know this was posted a while back but from the description i dont think its a water snake. It sounds like a water moccasin which can be very deadly. Too many people want to assume that snakes they find around their home are non venomous just to jave a sense of ease. But the fact is if it smelt the way you said and it was striking repeatedly it was more than likely a cotton mouth (water moccasin) which are also extremely agrresive

Ive seen hundreds of cottonmouths. Never one that is aggressive. Defensive, yes, if you poke at it, or nudge it with your boot, but never aggressive. They can let out a very strong smelling musk. Very cool snakes to work with in my opinion.
