Deadly cobra found in Union City apartment
By Karina Arrue/The Jersey Journal
February 05, 2010, 6:45PM
Google MapsA deadly cobra was found in a teenager's bedroom in Union City this week, police said.A venomous cobra was seized from a teenager's bedroom in a Union City apartment building this week after police received a tip, cops told The Jersey Journal today.
The monocled cobra belonged to Anthony Sweeney, 18, of 15th Street, police said.
Sweeney was not home when cops came knocking on Wednesday, but his mother let police in and led them to her son's bedroom when asked if there was a snake in the apartment, reports said.
Police located two snakes in two separate glass tanks -- the monocled cobra, approximately 20 inches in length, and a carpet python -- reports said.
Only the cobra was removed, police said.
State Department of Environmental Protection conservation officers assisted, police said.
Monocled cobras are considered a potentially dangerous species, which means they are capable of inflicting serious or fatal injuries, DEP spokeswoman Darlene Yuhas said.
A special permit is needed to own the snake, Yuhas said, and it requires a depth of knowledge and scientific background to obtain one.
Such permits are typically only given to zoos, she said.
"Your average resident could not own one of these," she added.
The NJDEP is investigating how the teen came to own the snake, which was transported to a safe location, Yuhas said.

Lets see, from Union City, NJ to Hamburg, PA is a 2 hour drive.
Guess it is possible someone would drive that far to a reptile show.
The article says a "teen," however, age 18 is most likely legal to purchase venomous snakes.
Seems that the lady in Virgina who was bitten also had a monocled cobra involved.
I wonder just who at Hamburg sells a lot of monocled cobras ? Must be a few dealers who specialize in them.
Might be interesting to know.
Best Regards

It is a 7 hour drive for me to hit Sanantonio .If it were only 2 hours I would never miss.I know at the SA show every one has to fill out a slip from the dealer if they did it would not be hard to find out.

"I wonder just who at Hamburg sells a lot of monocled cobras ? Must be a few dealers who specialize in them."
You might not want to find out that answer, John. It WILL be from a dealer that everyone in here knows and WILL be a dealer people in here are friends with.
Once again, if we can't police ourselves....
Bottom line is it starts with the dealers, PERIOD. If the same d!p$h!t$ keep selling to people they shouldn't, then they have NO right complaining about the laws and NO right bitching when they have no income. And people know EXACTLY who I'm talking about. They are bringing it on themselves and it's hurting everyone in the process. I don't see where the disconnect is.
Of course, I'm getting ahead of myself by saying that snake was bought at Hamburg, but....it either came from there or in a little box. And regardless of how, you WILL know who it came from. Sad, but true.

I know times can be hard, but it amazes me that the drive to make $70-100 makes the dealer, whoever it is, not even think about the hobby as a whole. How hard is it to ask for a driver's license and keep a record of all your sales? If the potential buyer lives in a state where it's venom then just don't sell to them. How difficult is that? It baffles me that so many people lack common sense; especially in such a scrutinized and unforgiving hobby. Maybe they should start releasing the dealer's names so the responsible keepers can impose boycott's on their snakes and hopefully those morons will just go away. I really don't care who it is. If they're too stupid to sell snakes responsibly what makes you think they should even be keeping them in the first place? -Jamie

This statement, "If the potential buyer lives in a state where it's venom then just don't sell to them" should have said:
If the potential buyer lives in a state where it's illegal to own venomous, then just don't sell to them.
I guess in a fit of utter aggravation I left some of it out! -Jamie

And now we have come back full circle to the mamba bite in Indianapolis and the guy who drove to North Carolina to buy a Forest Cobra which was illegal to have in Indiana without a permit.
The sellers claim that it is not their responsibility to track where the snake goes to if they sell it to someone in a state where it is legal to have.
This comes up all the time.
The fact is that you cannot stop people who are determined to break the law. You can slow them down. You can turn them in. You can refuse to help them. But somebody, somewhere is going to turn that buck and give them what they want.
Prohibition did not stop alcohol from turning up in any part of this country. People who live in dry counties, even today, will drive to where it is legal, buy what they want and take it home. The same goes for tobacco or any other item that people decide they have a right to have.
Just my opinion.
