Looks like Claxton Georgia is having another Rattlesnake Round Up this year. On the same weekend as the Columbia SC snake show, how ironic!!

I do not understand how any snake enthusiast can headline an event like this? Hope they enjoy their 30 pieces of silver!!

When will these be outlawed? Save the birds and all other species...but KILL THE SNAKES!!!! These "outings" are such crap. If it wasn't for snakes in the wild the rodent population would supercede us and we would living knee deep in rats and mice. Ok exaggerated a little bit, but they do help control the rodent population.

It brings money into the community. If it didn't, it would have stopped years ago.As long as the revenue keeps flowing, the roundups will continue.

There is an effort that is going on as I type which has recently begun to fight the two remaining roundups in GA. It is the Center For Biological Diversity that is pulling this attempt all together. Lets face it though, a Western based organization can do little but draft letters for a government hundreds of miles away. They are trying to partner with South Eastern conservation gorups and individuals who can help them fight this on "the front lines", aka inside the state of GA itself. I belive they have already sent their first proposal off to Purdue. Check it out if you want to help. Tierra Curry (I think thats how you spell it) is heading this one up.

One of the toughest things about fighting the roundups, is that part of the money raised goes tho things like the American Red Cross, or Shrinrs Hospitals, Muscular Dystrophy Association, American Heart Association, Special Olympics, etc.
If the folks receiving the "blood money" could be embarrassed by being associated with killing animals, perhaps we would have a better chance of getting roundups outlawed. However, the average small town hick who participates in the roundups thinks they serve a good purpose, and perhaps even a biblical purpose.
If you are on FaceBook, join these groups in addition to the ones that Bryan mentioned:
Rise Against Rattlesnake Roundups (RARR)

and
Biologists Against Rattlesnake Roundups (BARR)

Also, see this link to the roundups that are still going on across the country. There are far more of them than most of you know about:

I would like to see a group like the SHHS take a table at these roundups and pass out correct info about EDB's. I would be more than happy to donate my time and money to participate. I could arrange to have some impressive EDB's on display including one that is almost seven feet and 20 pounds.
At the past roundup in Whingham they brought in over 150 EDB's. The only way they can get that many is by gassing gopher tortoise burrows which is supposed to be illegal. The misinformation and ignorance that goes on in these barbaric events is sickening.
I still cant believe that Georgia DNR allows this to go on. The former Fitzgerald GA roundup is still successful without rattlesnakes. The only person that this benefits is the same skin dealer from Tennessee that buys all the EDB's at all the roundups and slaughters them right after the roundup.

For those of you that know me, know that I resent any kind of useless killing. Freer and Sweet Water Texas have been doing these damn round ups for so long that the local population of atrox have dwindled considerably. They have even started importing atrox from Oklahoma and New Mexico to pick up for the lack of numbers in recent years. The two towns are oil field towns, and due to the roller coaster rides in the 80's they literally thrive off of the snake round ups. Makes me sick just thinking about it. Despite major protests from all over the U.S. No one has really stepped up to stop it. Texas has some really good points about maintaing wildlife, but this isn't one of them. Alan

Hey Alan there is also brownwood as well as a few other snake slaughters in Texas it boils down to one thing the big bucks .In the late 80s I was kicked out of sweetwater for protesting.I just wish it could be done like a few other places all localitys marked all snakes released They would still draw crowds and make the big money.99% of all sweetwater snakes come from other parts of Texas or ok or nm. I lived in a small town south of sweet water and one day a guy from south Texas came through headed to the round up with his pick up bed with a cage around it and snakes piled all the way to the top well over 1000 snakes I would say.The damage that would do to a population is unthinkable.I have been to the big dens on the 18 ranch where it all began. They put a few snakes there every year for there touiest Buses but the snakes are long gone.
