I'm looking for building dimensions for the wooden frame, shift in the middle, double-lock on top hot herp box. If anyone has a clue as to what I'm describing, any input would be more than appreciated! Thanks! -James

Dimensions of course would depend on what you need - eg, what kind of snakes, etc. Are you needing something to safely transport venomous snakes in? Wooden boxes have the disadvantages of being very heavy and hard to clean, and they can harbor parasites, such as mites. Many of those old boxes also had screen or hardware cloth ventilation that raises the possibility of nose rubs. There are commercially available hard plastic containers called Action Packers - black with grey lids - that can be locked on either side. They are very lightweight and easy to clean/disinfect and probably cost a lot less than a homemade box, especially when you factor in time and trouble. If you like, you can screw an o-ring into the center of the lid so you can easily lift it with a hook.

Well, that just sounds better.....I was kind of shooting for the old nostalgia look that I became familiar with back in the day at Audubon Zoo when we'd transport hots and display them....it served as a dual purpose item. However....I am working on a few other things at the same time, so it would make more sense to look into the enclosure you suggested, rather than spend time constructing one just for the old timey look for a one-day display.
I'm going to be exhibiting a juvie cottonmouth and (most likely) a broad-banded watersnake at an upcoming event here in south Louisiana this coming month. So, there are the figurative sizes......is there a website where I can order these enclosures? Thanks! -j

Well, the Action Packers are obviously no good for display - we use them for transporting snakes from place to place around the zoo, as to the stage for talks, etc. I don't know where they got them, but I've seen carpenters and such using them so I'd guess they're at places like Lowes or Home Depot. I'm sure a search for "Action Packer" would turn them up online. I well understand the nostalgia thing too, but I don't miss the backaches and splinters. When I did off-site displays at museums, etc. I would always transport the glass-fronted displays and the snakes separately and set them up when I got there, behind locked doors. Broad-banded watersnakes are really interesting - I envy you guys having them around down there. I want to get a couple for our North America building if and when it ever opens.
