Up until last night I was a member of the Facebook group: "World Protection For Snakes - It's All About The Snakes."
After I recieved two email messages from the group yesterday, I decided to leave the group. The messages were regarding the Python Hunt in Florida. They had a very PETA/HSUS-ish feel to them. Especially these parts:
"The whole program could also be used to raise awareness about the problems of buying animals from the exotic pet trade..."
"Many people who buy exotics do not take care of them and that is how this invasive species problem started."
"If nothing else I hope that the problem with the pythons in the Florida everglades will help encourage people not to support the exotic pet trade..."
I assume most of the members here do not subscribe to the PETA/HSUS philosophy, so I figured I would share this in case any of you were members of this Facebook group.

Brandon, I noticed the same thing with them.
It is not uncommon for PETA / HSUSA folks to start up save the animals campaigns, then look for folks why keep animals on FaceBook.
Those folks are urging folks to protest the Burmese python hunts in the Everglades. They are saying that the invasive snakes should not be killed, but instead, given to reptile rescues and zoos who are then supposed to find good homes for them as pets, LOL.
Just what every kid needs for a pet ! A 12 foot wild caught Burmese Python, tick infested, ugly, parasitized, and with the sweet, sweet temperament that wild caught Burmese pythons are known for, LOL.
These folks could be extremest like PETA, or, could just be stupid. What ever they are, don't friend them on facebook!
Best Regards
John Z

"Snake Conservation 101 - dedicated to save the snakes"
I think these are the same kind of people. I've gotten the same kind of messages from this "snake loving" group myself. They were deleted about a week ago.

Maybe instead of leaving the group, you could use it as an educational opportunity to try to talk up the benefits of being able to responsibly keep snakes as pets. Disappearing will do nothing for our cause.

It is Matt from Canada, he approached REXANO few years back, and we have 2 of his editorials for differen point of view:
snakes
http://www.rexano.org//ConservationPages/FriendlySnakesFrame.htm
turtles
http://www.rexano.org//ConservationPages/pet_turtles_Frame.htm
he is not peta, just extreme animal welfare, so you can try to talk to him to ask him to maybe reword/correct some stuff, he basically says if u want a pet reptile, get captive bred or adopt homeless one, don't kill wild snakes, etc...

Chance, in regards to your post.... I did write a few messages back to them after they sent these to the group but never got a response. They seem to be stuck on this one subjectand it is crap if you ask me. Adopting out a wild-caught burmese python would be a nightmare for anyone that ended up getting one.

If you read their facebook page, you will see that a lot of herpers have tried to reason with those folks.
They seem to be really set in the direction they are trying to take.
