This, alone is pretty bad to your pocket.
Over here, we are kind of lucky with the National Health Service (NHS) in the sense that our healthcare is free, subsequently, so is treating snake bites. I guess that is one upside to Government ran Healthcare. LOL!
Last I heard on another Forum, CroFab was pushing $2,500 an ampule? Times that by three, or four, and you're looking at a Car! Times it by 20 or more, plus a week or more's stay in hospital, and you can safely say goodbye to any Vacations you may wish to take for a few years. If your in the US atleast.
James.

Last May I received 23 vials of CroFab for a horridus bite @ $900.00 per vial.Don't ask me why it was so "cheap", but I was pleasantly surprised. Chris H. said that the hospital being so rural probably had a lot to do with it. If I had gone to Atlanta or Athens, it probably would have been a lot more. Plus 5 days stay, 4 in ICU. Thank God for insurance! Take care, Marty

Archie: At venom week 2009 there was a paper given that the more crofab given for a copperhead bite, the better the morbidity out come. That is the resulting damage that remains as a physical deficient.

That is the unfortunate thing about hospitals. Greed.
They are free to take a $900.00 antivenin, and mark it up to $5,000.00 or even $10,000.00 a vial.
Just a couple of years ago, the parents of a little girl on the east coast, who had been bitten by a venomous snake, wound up with a $150,000.00 hospital bill, and 85% of that was pure greed and profit markup from the hospital. I think the CroFab had been marked up to about $10,000 or $12,000 a vial !
As much as I do not like the idea of government regulations concerning health care costs, something like marking up antivenin 5 or 10 times over cost, just for pure greed, should be regulated.
Someone who has been bitten by a venomous snakes does not have the luxury of shopping around for the best deal in which hospital they should attend for treatment !
Best Regards
John Z

Yep its a darn shame at those markups. Its also a shame when its cheaper for me to import and stock my own a/v for foreign species.

I was bitten twice by a rattlesnake while hiking in Ojai 2 months ago (June 5th). They are charging me over $500,000. Yeah. Really. 48 vials of Crofab. 4 1/2 days in ICU. Does this bill sound "normal" to anyone who's been through this???

Yes, it does. My horridus bite a little over a year ago took 23 vials, 5 days in the hosp., 4 of those in ICU. They only charged me $900.00 per vial on the CroFab, that's the cheapest I've ever heard. I was happy with it.My total cost was $35,000. After insurance, my out of pocket was $1500.00. I know a guy that recently took an EDB bite, 60 vials of CroFab @ $7500.00 per vial. It depends on where you go. Take care, Marty
