Hello, I am currently learning as much as I can about herps at the momment! I do not keep any Hots yet! I am verey strong in my opinion with "learn before purchase" and that goes for all herps!! I have been working with reptiles for a short time now, since 2006! But the more interested in Hots for the past two years! I would love to keep Naja kaouthia, and A.c.phaeogaster. But most of all I want to work with and keep S.c.cantenatus! I want to work with S.c.cantenatus since they are endangered in Illinois! They are also one of the most beautiful rattlers! I have met a lot of people on line that work with or keep other Sistrurus miliarius. I know that Sistrurus antivenin is quite costly around $700 a vile. And that Naja Kaouthia can cost as little a $30 a vile! But the point is where is a reliable source for buying antivenin? I would also like to know if there is any one in my area who would have the time to teach me more that I need to. I have the basics and am confident that I could keep now, but I prefer to play it safe! I learn quickly, know a lot but dont think I know it all! I am open minded to the veiws and processes of others, you have obviously been doing this for some time for a reason! I do not belive in the free handling of Hots unless you are milking or giving medical care to the Hot! Thanks you guys here are great!

Jeff, if you live in Illinois, you should contact Rob Carmichael.
He is the Curator/Founder of the Wildlife Discovery Center & Faculty at the College of Lake County Division of Biological Sciences.
He should be able to put you in touch with the right people. Could be that you could volunteer for some of the research projects he is working on.
Best Regards
John Z

Good deal, Jeff....it's never too late to go back to school. It will only benefit you when you're done.
As far as CroFab AV goes, you can get it by simply having your physician sign a script. There's no red tape...except the insurance company, which will not cover any of the cost. You'll pay a pretty penny and you'll safely need to keep ~10-20 vials for a moderate sistrurus bite...depending on the species. Massasauga's are not as responsive to CroFab as pygmy's are and can really mess with your blood counts.
Prices will vary on CroFab...
For kaouthia, you'll need Thai Red Cross Cobra AV..I'm pretty sure it's a monovalent, but not 100%. It's only good for a single species, unlike CroFab, which can run through the majority of the crotalids..with lesser effect on some than others.
The price is quite abit cheaper...I can't remember offhand, but I think it was in the low hundreds. But, there is some red tape involved as it's deemed an experimental drug by the FDA and is not approved by them. Because of this, there are several permits that need to be had in order to obtain the AV.If you go through the file library, there are instructions by a member here that shows what to do to get foreign AV.

Thanks Tj!! I have heard so much about CroFab not too much of it has been good!?! But since I am still new to Hots, I have no idea! I have heard from other experianced Hot keepers on Facebook that CroFab is just "...expesive junk.." Like I sayd though I have no idea! I just know that they are the only one that have been approved by the FDA.(I think) Which to me does not say much. The FDA approves a lot of crap when it comes to medical issues that should not be approved! It all depends on who has the money I guess! Thanks again to everyone here! You all a very profesional!! I have been to so many sites where people like me have just been treated like crap, when asking questions about getting into Hots!! You guys give out great advice and do it politely!! Yes there are some people who should not be trying to get into Hots for safety reasons and so on..wanting to keep them to look cool and stuff. And I have seen them here to, and you all still go about it respectfully when you notice it! Other sites I have seen the experianced keepers just all out bash the people who ask questions about Hots!! Thanks again!!
