On March 4, The Utah division of wildlife resources upheld the ban on rattlesnakes: http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=9895937
The decision was made on the basis that there was not enough support from reptile enthusiasts and more support from none reptile enthusiasts. I am disappointed that we did not stand up as a group and finally do our hobby some good. I have nothing but respect for my fellow enthusiasts, but the fact is if we want our hobby to change for the better we need to all stand together to get things changed. I have noticed that every issue we have had in our hobby that only a portion of the reptile community try to support it. I am NOT saying that the people that aren't supporting this or that don't care about these things because I know that every single one of use cares about what happens to our hobby, I think that when we see things like this were we could make a difference, we don't realize how much help a single vote or a single e-mail can do our community. I think in the future we should start working together to help each other out on things like this. If one state changes its rules and regulations, then maybe other states may do the same. If there ever comes a chance to change our hobby for the better, we should ALL try to help that change to happen no matter what. Even if we think that our input couldn't possibly help, I think it should be spoken or written or e-mailed or even texted if we think it could even remotely help. There are at least thousands of us out there. Lets use our numbers to our advantage. Lets all stand up and support each other when things like this come into play. We may not succeed, but at least we can say that we tried. I would hope that nobody would take offense to this, I am NOT saying that there are people here that don't care, I am saying that we need to work better as a group. These are just my thoughts on the matter.

I think one huge challenge we face is the amount of separatism in this hobby...the 15 year old bearded dragon breeder or the 50 year old teacher and box turtle enthusiast doesn't see why anyone needs a venomous snake, so why support it? "It doesn't affect me" is what's gonna eventually bring us down. If you like herps, you need to be able to support all aspects of herpetoculture, not just when it threatens you personally.
