The problem with innaccurate and incomplete reporting:
"left vacant following the owner's arrest"
I wonder how many people have a plan in place to care for their animals if they are arrested and unable to get home?
There is a link in the article to the Florida Today report which says that "Police booked Barry Walter, 43, into the Brevard County Detention Center this afternoon on 122 counts of animal cruelty."
So maybe he wasn't already in jail for something else.
Hard to tell.
No matter how you look at it, snakes left in enclosures "until they liquify" is absolutely wrong!
I wonder how you have over 100 snakes in your home and not be breeding something?
Totally weird.
And it says he had rattlesnakes, so either he had a permit and had been inspected by FWCC, or they blew off the inspection and are partly at fault, or he was breaking the law by keeping without a permit ...
Way too much going on here beyond the few scant facts that were reported.

I know as of recent that there was a person charged with child endangerment for every dead venomous snake in his freezer. So if you have a dead venomous snake in the freezer and kids have access to it get rid of it now.The charges have not been dropped and will not be.I also herd that if you have a dead snake in the freezer you better have a vet report of its treatment or animal cruelty charges can be filed.Yet any one can kill a snake and be the local hero in the local paper.Serious stuff guys.

While the number of dead snakes (assuming that part is accurate) indicates a serious problem, I unfortunately know from experience that a dead snake can "liquify" in a warm snake room in just a few days...

Oh, and the wording of the story is unclear, but it could be interpreted to say that at least some of the dead snakes were in the freezer.

Some of the snakes might have been in a freezer, however, you can see that they have at least 100 plastic containers with water bowls in them stacked up, so, most of the snakes were probably in those. Not likely someone would freeze a dead snake along with the water bowl.
I wonder if something like the Paramyxovirus might have overwhelmed the collection, and made them all sick very quickly.
As Larry stated, it does not take long for a snake to liquefy after it is dead, if the weather is hot.
Will be interesting to see what additional information comes out.
Best Regards

That is wild, that a frozen snake could be child endangerment. I have a few in the freezer, but my freezer is in my hot room which is an outbuilding and stays locked. I wonder if that would make a difference. I don't have a vet report on them though. But I don't have one on all of the venison and wild hog either that's in the other freezer. I wouldn't think that would hold up in court. Not in GA anyways. The hunting rules and regs state that venomous snakes can be taken at any time no license required. (along with a few other non game species.) Take care, Marty

"Liquify" is a broad term. A venomous snake (rattlesnakes are especially good at it) can become nastified (gooder term) overnight. Could it be that the home got too warm, the boxes were left in the sun, virtually one of dozens of things that might have killed off numerous snakes quickly?
I am in no way taking sides on either front. I do have some problems at times trusting in much that animal control officers relay as thier "expert opinion".
