I was browsing through the internet, conducting some research, and came accross a couple of articles and blogs that really grinded my gears.

Here's a clip from another article:
"The study suggests that the rattlesnakes’ low profile and penchant for hiding leads to a high number of incidents in which the snakes are stepped on or tripped over. In addition, it was noted that there is no empirical evidence that rattlesnakes can be trained.
“I thought Striker was just slow on the update,” said Vinson ruefully. “No wonder he never passed obedience school.”
The study noted that many snake owners are under the impression that rattlesnakes are less dangerous than dogs because “their teeth are smaller.” Forty percent of respondents also stated they were “unsure” whether rattlesnakes are reptiles or mammals; thirty percent believed that lettuce was an appropriate food for their snakes.
“You know what,” said Falstell, “it may be better just to let snake owners keep the snakes, and let nature take its course. I think society will be better off as a result.”

Seeing stuff like this really upsets me. What more can we do as a community of responsible venomous keepers to keep nonsense like this to a minimum?
It seems to me that it's the irresponsible people within our hobby who become the poster children of all those who set out to destroy us.

My two attempts to find out what was contained in the "MatchMyPet" forum failed to turn up anything. I briefly perused through the forum on reptiles and quickly discovered that the average age of the posters appears to be less than 10. Most of the questions and most of the answers are by children, young children, so you will have to take that on its own value.
As for the Watley Review "article", methings you should have gone to their homepage and clicked on their disclaimer, and upon doing so you would have quickly discovered that Watley's, like The Onion, is a SATIRE site. I mean, how seriously can you take anything published on a site on which today's "news" states, "Supervillian Angered By Obama's Reputation as Greatest Threat To America"? Here is their disclaimer page, by the way: http://www.watleyreview.com/About.html . IMHO, this silliness is no real threat at all, less so than a movie like "Anaconda" and FAR less so that our own lawmakers and the Animal Rights movement.

good point about the waitley review... I do feel a bit silly now. I must admit if I was going to put a reference like that in a research papar, I'd do a better job at researching the source. My bad.
There was, however and article I found about a man who put his pet rattlesnake in his mouth to impress his friends and was nearly killed...

Either way, my question is what more can we do to try and police ourselves so legislators don't have so much ammunition to use against the hobby?

One more thing to add: The birthdates on the 'match my pet' forums seem to be the birthdates of the pets, not the posters, so the average age is probably older than 10.
I would however, like to assume that no reasonable adult would want to 'defang' their wild caught rattlesnake so they can 'hold it and stuff'. Alas, I believe this would be assuming too much of some people.
