I live in New York, and would love to own a venomous snake at some point but i understand that i need to get a permit first. What do i have to do to qualify for one? And who do i call or write?

Right now they aren't giving out permits in NY. If you didn't get grandfathered in when the law changed, you're SOL.
There is an exhibitor's license, but I'm not sure what is all involved with it. I think you have to have a number of educational displays per year and whatnot.
Contact the special license unit and see what they have to say or check out the NYSDEC's webpage. It might have some helpful tidbits.
