Hi,
Could someone please clarify a couple of things for me? In the case where someone has an allergic reaction to antivenom, is the reaction to the horse/sheep antibodies or something else? Is it possible to analyze blood from the effected person and determine, from looking at the persons antibodies, exactly what they are reacting to? In other words can they use human antibodies to infer the antigen?
Thank you,
Kelly

Hi, as far as i know the main problem in snake bite paitents who have a reaction to anti-venom is that they are primarily allergic to the test animal's blood ( horses, sheep etc). Not too sure about the scientific side of it though...
Hope this helps

Read...this on Allergic Reactions to Snakebite & Snake venom. Not only can serious allergies exsist to antivenoms but Snake venoms too. No previous exposure is really required. Actually the old skin test they used to give to see if you were allergic to the host animal the antibodies were raised in, made many people instantly sensitized.

With CroFab, papain is used to cleave the hinge region of the whole immunoglobulin molecule into the fragments (hence the name Fab- Fragment antigen binding) that eliminates the Fc fragment thought to be associated with most allergies to the animal product. However, if you have allergies to papain, papaya extracts, chymopapain or the pineapple enzyme bromelain, you are at risk for an allergic reaction to CroFab. In that case, it is actually a reaction to one of the chemicals used in the production process rather than a reaction to the sheep.

I went in to full blown shock from the old horse serum and suffered full blown cardiac arrest in 1986.I had no such reaction to crofab yet it did little good as well.No copperheads are used to make it and it does not work that well on there bite.
