I'm finishing up my piece on / paean to the Gaboon and still fishing for a firsthand account of envenomation. I've recounted the famous Marlin Perkins incident and the boy who stole a pair from the DC Zoo, but a firsthand account would be invaluable, particularly the conditions leading up to the bite, initial symptoms, the recovery process, etc. My intention here is not to trivialize or sensationalize, but rather to give a more compelling, nuanced account of the sheer power of these animals.
If anyone's willing to share their story, would you email me directly? If you'd rather i not mention your name in the piece, we can figure out a pseudonym or just have it be anonymous...
Thank you! Adam

Below are some accounts that might help you, although they are not first hand. The first is a synopsis of the medical treatment and lab findings of a man bitten on the hand by an adult Gaboon (with suspected intravenous injection of venom).
The second is a medical report of a Winnipeg (Canada) man bitten on the face. He had been drinking (about 10 beers) and decided to take his Gabby out and play with it... bad idea. It didn't work out very well for him. I hope you're up on your medical terminology and abbreviations because this report is full of them. The only thing I disagree with is that the doctor who wrote it thought the bite may have been a dry bite when it was clearly not (they had to fly in antivenin from Toronto to save the man).

Probably wasn't a dry bite, but it clearly did not involve a lot of venom, since the consequences were relatively minor, despite the late administration of he a/v - looks to me like it might have ended without too much trauma if they had not bothered with that (unlike in the Swiss case)

Probably not very many reports from survivors of severe Gaboon viper envenomations, cause they’re all dead.

I have a picture from Venom week 2009 of a WA Gaboon bite in Africa in the lower leg. I'll take a Black Mamba bite any-day thanks....
