In 43 years of working with venomous snakes, I have had them drop on top of my feet a few times.
And, in photographing them, have had venomous snakes crawl over my feet more than a few times.
No bites so far, but, some of the snakes sure had the opportunity. The dropped snakes were probably as startled at being dropped, as I was of them landing on my feet.
And, the ones crawling away were more interested in escape, than they were in biting a large warm heat signature.
I hate to say it, but, I do work with captive venomous snakes barefoot at home more than I should. But, it is usually smaller snakes like pygmy rattlesnakes. If it is a big canebrake or timber rattlesnake, or a big eastern diamond-backed rattlesnake, then I will wear shoes, although those snakes could probably easily bite through those shoes. But, it does make me feel a bit safer.
Best Regards

The main thing is to be careful, and to try to keep it out of video where it can be used to make folks in the hobby from looking reckless.

Chris, That is the case with everyone that works with hots. I do think things through and have very detailed procedures on how to perform even the most basic cage maintenance. There is always going to be a chance of us getting bit and I can live with that because I have reduced that chance extensively. I just do not see how shoes would make a difference.
Where does one draw the line? is this acceptable?

what about this?

These are just 2 of the hundreds of examples in the SHHS galleries of how little protection shoes actually offer.

Okay, I believe that this thread has gone on far enough.
Both sides have stated their points and neither is changing the other sides' minds.
For what it's worth, I wear shoes when I work venomous but I think it is ridiculous to expect anyone to wear boots every time they work venomous.
To give everyone a chance to continue to speak out on this, I am starting a new thread just for the discussion of boots and shoes while working venomous.
This thread, is officially done.
