Hey guys, I've talked to Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency about acquiring my Class I Wildlife permit for Venomous Snakes. I have to wait until I'm 21 (Works for me!). I have to take a test over all Class I Wildlife (Bears, Crocodylia, etc.). I have the rules and regulations in printing, mailed to me by a TWRA representative. I have looked over them and one of the regulations for owning these snakes is I have to have antivenin for each species that is in my possession. The rule reads:
(D) Poisonous Animals. Poisonous Animals shall be kept in a cage or in a glass enclosure sufficiently strong, and, in the case of a cage, of small enough mesh to prevent the animal's escape. The cage or glass enclosure must be kept inside an outer cage, or glass enclosures must be kept locked at all times. No person except the permittee or such person's authorized employee shall open any cage or other container which contains poisonous animals. (BOLD) Persons keeping poisonous animals shall have in their possession antivenin for each species possessed;(BOLD)
I am curious how do I go about being certified to have a private collection of antivenin. I am thinking I have to go through the FDA. Any help?
Thanks,
Zach Goldsmith

You will need an IND number and typically (I believe) a doctor is required to keep it for you.
I believe there is a thread on this site that explains what is needed and how to get it.
As far as I know, there is no antivenin needed/available for Poisonous Animals (generally amphibians)!

The doctor doesn't actually need to store the AV for him, but he will need the doctor to sponsor him for the IND.
That being said...you're better off moving than jumping through TN's hoops and getting your hopes up, only to find you will NEVER get a permit to keep venomous there. They're one of the states that will make you go through the process, but won't issue one.
Even people with vast amounts of experience have tried and been shot down.

Here are 2 links that will be helpful in your process to get a BB-IND# and VS 16-3 APHIS Veterinary Drug Import Permit:

Yea, I can't believe they still call them Poisonous ....
I have considered moving from Tennessee but we'll have to see where life takes me from here.
Thanks for the links, I'll have to dig a little deeper. Yay, looks like more permits required!!

Alrighty, starting to understand this process.
I do have a question though; what is the "package insert" they are talking about? How do I go about acquiring one of these?
Regards,
Zach

This is what comes with the antivenin. Basically directions for mixing it up and administering it along with the side effects.

I don't know which AV's you are attempting to obtain, but I keep my own Thai Red Cross Cobra Antivenin & SAIMR Polyvalent. If you need either 1 of these, e-mail me and I scan and email you those two inserts...otherwise call Venom 1 Rescue Miami Dade @ their NON_EMERGENCY line@ (786)331-4444. Sandy, i believe her name was very helpful and they are good about snail mailing you 1 if it is an AV they commonly use. If not, they can give you the the manufacurer's contact info. and they will air mail you inserts.
Drew.
