Can anyone here generalize about the relative swarthiness / pallor of gaboons? I'm not looking for formal taxonomic distinctions per se, but given their immense range, I was curious to know of regional tendencies re coloration.
I've seen almost charcoal gray ones on the central west coast. And I have friends that have photographed chocolaty-brown ones in the deeper, more inland forests. And I've seen pictures of pale (tan) ones in the savannah in the east, i.e., the kind you're most likely to see in collections.
Are these just subjective, partial observations on my part? Or do some regions / countries tend to yield up particular colorations? Are some localities more valuable / brilliant in color / sought after (like, say, a gaboon equivalent of Irutu rhinos?)
Thanks for any insights here! Adam

I think you were looking for ituri forest rhinos. I am not a gabby expert, but I keep gabbys. I believe it is just as in many ssp. What they look like is largely based on the area/country they come from. There are people here with more direct knowledge who can elaborate furthur. My trio comes from ghana and are mostly pinks, golds, and purples. My bro has some that are from a different reigion and are very dark in pattern and colors are largely chocolates, blacks, tans and alot of purple mainly in the face.
Good luck be safe.

Thanks for your response. I wasn't looking for Ituri nasicornis -was nowhere near eastern DRC, but along the Cameroon / CAR border. (Would've been pleased as punch to see one though!)
Mostly I was using them as an analogy - people talk lovingly of the brilliant coloration of rhinos out of Ituri and I was curious to see if there were
a.) any similarly prized localities for B. g. gabonica and / or rhinoceris
b.) regional color tendencies - darker, purpler, chocolatier, yellows, etc.

To clarify: I know there are all these variations in color, but I wanted to know if one could (even roughly) generalize about, say, coloration in the west (Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, etc.) as opposed to, say, the east or southern portions of the continent...

I think it would have alot to do with the terrian of the location. More forested or covered would make me think darker coloration for better heat absorbtion. The more savannah like open or exposed countries would have the lighter color phases to release heat quicker. As I said I am not well versed in bitis local versus color. If Al chimes in he would probably shed the light a bit better for you on this subject. Tim
