I am having a problem and I definitely need some expert help. I bought a pair of baby Wetar Island Pit Vipers from someone on this site this weekend. The guy was cool and I don't have a problem with him personally. The snakes he gave me were in really good condition and are doing just fine. However, the female he gave me is lime green and not yellow. The male is yellow. He said that the Wetars have three color variations, Yellow, lemon yellow, and lime green. I never heard of this before but I took his word for it. I paid $550.00 for both snakes. The next day my friend came over and said there is no such thing as a lime green Weter and that this was either a cross between a white lip and a Wetar or a really light white lip and that I got ripped off. I told him that the guy said that the snakes were from the same clutch, but my friend was very adamant that it was a scam. I then called two very reputable people in the industry who I know and who are breeding Wetars and they said that they have never heard of lime green Wetars and that they would not pay $300.00 for such a snake. I emailed the guy and asked him if I could give him the lime green one back for a yellow and he said he had no yellows left. I have four questions: 1) Has anyone ever heard of a lime green Wetar (it has dark blue in between the scaling unlike the light blue on the yellows). 2) Would any of you pay $300.00 for such a snake ? 3) Did I get ripped off ? I mean, I plan on breeding these things one day and selling them myself so I don't want to tell people I have Wetars when I really don't and I don't want people to pay less for my snakes when I myself invested a lot in them. 4) Was it shady that he didn't tell me that he had color variations before he brought me the snakes. I mean, I did pay $550.00 for them and the typical Wetar is yellow. This fact and the fact that he said he had no more yellows seem like red flags. However, I am ignorant on the matter and the seller seems like a nice guy so I don't want to make too big of a deal about this or wrongly accuse him of ripping me off when he didn't. What do you guys think ?

Your friend is wrong. There is such a thing as a lime-green wetar. (insularis). There is also a "normal" green phase. The Insularis is a break-off of the albolabris. they are the SAME snake. Scale counts on both albolabris and insularis are the SAME.

Who are the two reputable peple you called about this?
Consult "Asian Pitvipers" by Gumprecht, et. al.
You will see no less than 11 photo's of
"Green" snakes, and 3 of "lime" green. Pg. 210-14.
Also consult "Venomous Snakes of Asia" by Gernot Vogel, this backs that up as well.

The two people I consulted were Mitch from diamond reptile breeders and this guy al from PA who calls himself the viper keeper and he said I got ripped off. Also, if the lime greens are part of the local, are they worth as much as the yellows ? I mean a yellow eyelash viper is worth more then a green. Would you pay 300 for a lime green ?

Well, as far as I know, Mitch agree's with me that they are the same as Albolabris. Also, as far as I know, Mitch hasn't produced any babies yet, he is taking deposits on a gravid female on Kingsnake classifieds. Al Coritz, as far as I know hasn't produced any in captivity, he might have, not sure, He may have had a wild-caught drop babies in captivity though.
Read the accts. in the two books I provided.

I keep wetars. Mine were produced by a good friend and my male has lime green skin with butter yellow scales. I know for a fact they are wetars also the mothers and fathers are lemon gold. Yes green wetars do exist and as far as I can tell very few in numbers compared to the golds. I have a second pair coming this summer from my same buddy and I am hopeing for a green female and gold male. I really like the contrast. I also keep a colony of albos and there are distinct differences in looks, structure and attitude even in my experience. Best of luck with them. If they need a new home let me know. Tim

Ok, so wetars can be green or lime green and the green wetars are distinct from the white lips. Just so I know in the future, and so I can inform people who may have the same question, what are the differences between a green wetar and a white lip. Also, can some one please answer my main question: do green and lime green wears condor less money then the yellows ? If I put an ad out asking 300 for them, will some one say to me "hey buyer the lime greens only go for 200 ? A simple yes or no answer would be nice. Also if any one disagrees please speak up I don't want to find out the hard way in a few years from now.

I don't think Green wetars are worth less money than the Yellow ones. After all, there still Wetars. However, Yellow specimens would command more money. I suspect Wetars "throw" both color phases, i.e., green/yellow. Doesn't diminish the fact that they are Wetars though. I had a clutch two years ago that had both color phases.

I just ask myself. How many golds do you see for sale? How many greens if any are for sale? I wouldnt sell my greens simply cause you may get several litters of golds before you get any greens.

Wish I knew sooner it was mike t. you got them from. I can vouch for his undoubtly. I own several of his animals and have my name on another pair of wetars due this summer hopefully. And as far as I know the female whos to be expecting came from al since his male passed away before he could breed them.
