I thought I was smart until I took this quiz. I got ~40% the first time taking it. It is more difficult than you might think. I just thought you guys might get a kick out of it.

The turtle questions killed me. I also got a few marked incorrect that I knew such as Kaufield based on spelling. My score was <50 as well.

Yep, not a great quiz. Very biased toward the turtle folks. very biased toward the lizard folks. Very biased toward the left coast. Questions all over the map. Mostly a waste of time.

I thought it was a pretty interesting quiz that really made me reach back into the depths of my memories from the herp class I took in college. I didn't score well largely for the same reasons you guys have listed. What really bugged me was very slight spelling errors causing you to miss the answer. There probably could have, and should have, been a bit more tolerance for spelling but with a simple quiz like that the computer has to match it exactly.
All in all I enjoyed the challenge, even if it did make me feel a little ignorant by the end.
