There are a group of administrators for this site.
Should you choose to actively participate here for more than just a one-time informational question, it might be beneficial to get to know who they are.
Chris Harper started this site in early 1999.
He is the founder of the Southeastern Hot Herp Society as it exists today. At one time this was a dues-paying, newsletter publishing group but the advent and spread of online organizations made this format unfeasable and the society currently exists as an informational website with a loosely organized cadre of volunteers who manage the website.
I joined the society in 1999 and have been contributing to the website since then. My involvement with venomous snakes has been completely within the private sector from 1976 through 2006 when I retired from the US Navy and went to work at a local zoo. The zoo does not dictate, control, or even seem to much care about my personal interest in the private ownership of venomous reptiles. If you need any more information about me or my personal beliefs, please feel free to email me at buzztail1@hotmail.com
John Zegel and Al Coritz are both well respected members of the private community of venomous keepers who donate their time to help manage the various tasks that are involved in running the website.
Daniel Duff first came to this site a little underaged to legally be keeping venomous reptiles but his enthusiasm and perseverence paid off and he has been involved in assisting with the website for a while now.
Todd Poole has been an active member of the society for many years and also found this website to be worthy of his time to help out.
John Mendrola is the newest member of the website team although he has participated in discussions here for several years and usually provides a very level-headed approach to many of the odd situations presented here.
I cannot profess to begin to tell anyone how any of these team-members will respond to any questions that you may have. However, I can tell you that this site does not exist to promote any agenda other than those described in the "About the SHHS" link in the navigation bar to your left.
We have managed to gain the support and respect of some of the most prestigious people in ALL FACETS of the venomous reptile community from toxicologists and taxonomists through zoo keepers and administrators and on into breeders and keepers from the private sector. We elevate no-one to any status in this group but rather require civility and respect in any communications no matter who is involved.
If you are not able to carry on a civil and respectful communication then this is not the website for you. There are countless others to choose from. We thank you all for your participation and interest and hope that you will continue to use this site to learn more about venomous reptiles or share what you have learned with others. Equally, we hope that you will understand that this site will not become a soapbox for any to promote their own personal agenda regardless of their rationale. Again I would refer you to the mission statement contained in the About the SHHS link to your left.
Finally, those people who have been named in this post are free to respond to this as I have placed them in the spotlight without their express consent.
Any other remarks or concerns may be directed specifically to me at buzztail1@hotmail.com

Well said Karl, we all are fortunate to have the access to the vast knowledge available on this site, with the diverse levels of experience, beginners and experienced alike, can access this site and ask just about any question and receive an answer from several sources and often be directed to reference material aswell.
Thanks to all who have worked and shared to make this site the great source of information and resources that it is.

Thanks for your post Karl.
I have gained some great information from this site and have enjoyed the discussions that pertain to our common interest of keeping venomous herps responsibly.
I also feel I have made some good contacts via this site.

I've loved this site for years. Well put Karl, and thanks to all the other admins who do the thankless job of keeping the website up.
Let's hope the trolls will leave us in peace.

Great post Karl. I've enjoyed the use of this website going on 10 years now and though it can get bit heated at times, it has been invaluable in helping me increase my understanding of both venomous and nonvenomous herps.
May this site long be available to everyone interested.

On the three sites I visit almost nightly; this one first, Kingsnake second and venom-center third, I've found that if you ask a serious question, serious people will respond with good knowledge/advice. On the other hand, if you ask a loony question, the loons will come out of the woodwork and take up to 3 pages of lunacy to the point Karl has to get involved. And we all know, when Karl gets involved, the thread is not going in a positive direction.
From my point of view, I look at these forums similarly to the way I look at work. These sites are a revenue stream of information that I need. If I'm sitting in a company meeting and some person is really going off on an unacceptable tangent or posing some really off the wall position, I don't contribute. I'll let him/her go on and hang him/herself. A boss will be listening to the tirade thinking to himself...O.K., next lay-off, they're gone.
We can make people gone on this forum by not responding when the post is really nuts. Think of this place as you think of your job. It's a critical information stream to what we do as a dangerous hobby/profession. So protect it like you would your job.

When I first became attuned to the online community of herpetophiles and realized that I was not so alone in the world after all, this was one of the first sites I discovered and it remains my favorite. Much applause for all concerned.
