Many knew Luke and while he took a lot of chances working with his kings, he was very knowledgeable and always helpful in providing husbandry advice. Always tough when we lose someone from our community whether you liked or disliked how he did things. Here's the link (so I'm not sure if its confirmed if it was Luke - I tried to reach him but no luck).

I believe it was him. Their site is now down also, showing under construction.

It is sad that he is gone but we should all take this as a lesson not to take unnecessary risks with our hots.

Tragic indeed. I've known him well since August 1993! Can't say a bad thing about him.
Of note at this time, is that he had told me several times that he'd wanted ALL his Kingies to be venomoid, BUT had seen the attacks I'd sustained here in Australia for doing much the same (venomoiding all we used in displays), and was fearful of the same happening to him from certain well-known individuals.
Well he got bitten one way or other and he paid the ultimate price.
With four well-known snake handlers killed this year, the "anti's" are having a field day trying to ban anything with scales.
All I can say, is that the warning was given in 2004 and not only ignored, but lampooned.
RIP Luke

It is indeed Luke.
Yesterday was a very sad day for all of us, paticularly the community in the UK, as it's extremely rare to have a death from a venomous snake in this country.
I hope Luke's legacy and his life work will be continued for generations to come, not only by his family and closest friends, but, by budding venomous snake keepers and current venomous snake keepers and herpetologists from the world over.
One last thing:
Ray, please can I kindly request that you keep your venomoid discussions off of this thread.
Thanks,
J.

I have known Luke for 30 years so his tragic death hit me really hard (I was one of the first people to know)......
Now is not the time to be discussing the "what if's" certainly NOT in public!
I come from several generations of Zoo Staff.... no one ever forced me into this career. As a professional working in venom research I belong to an exclusive club of people who extract venom for a living.... I know the risks that I take every single day..... I also know that what I do here has real benefits in that the venom I have extracted has directly gone on to save around 20,000 lives across West Africa (that is just one example).
Unless there is a miracle and every venomous snake in the world is transformed into a harmless mutant, there will continue to be a need for people such as myself to take on a level of risk for the greater good of humanity.
People are drawn towards venomous snakes for various reasons.... it would be naive to think that their potential to cause harm & death isn't part of the fascination.
A very sad loss to us all, RIP Luke.
