I am considering taking the plunge from newspaper to cypress mulch for my helo's and snakes. This is just the stuff from Lowes or Home Depot, right? Any other advice or suggestions?

I have settled in on a mix of cypress mulch with aspen...a little more aspen than cypress. Note that its hard to get "pure" cypress mulch....most will say that it is a mix of various species on the label.

Where do you live that its hard to get cypress mulch? Atwoods, lowes, and homedepot all sell 2 & 4 sq yard bags for 2 to 4 dollars a bag or less. I usually get a half a pallet once a year. Cypress is all Ive used for years. I mix in a bit of top soil for some of the burrowers. The only exception is of course my cerastes cerastes.

It is hard to get cypress mulch that is pure and not blended is what he was saying. I can almost bet if you are buying from Lowes, Home Depot, or walmart, that you are getting "blended" mulch. At least I have yet to find a bag that is pure cypress.

Ive never had any problems finding pure cypress. Bag reads 100% cypress. The only time Ive ran into any problem was in arizona and it wasnt the mulch itself. It was the fact that it had to be trucked in and cost $18 a bag! Now that Im back home in ok you can find it anywhere. At any nursery or feed and tac store. Let.me know if you want some shipped to you. Be happy to help. As I said its all I use for many years now.
