The account you are reffering to is about a gentleman named Kevin Budden. He died collecting the first COASTAL TAIPAN for antivenom research. It truley is a tragic story. Many people in OZ and PNG owe him alot. Although the specimen he had collected ended up dying shortly thereafter, the venom samples collected did alot for research at the time.
If you checkout The Australian Herpetology website put up by David Williams you should be able to locate another account of the tragedy.
BTW, I think only one or maybe no fatlities have been recorded from the Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidus. Hope I got that spelling correct). They occur in areas mostly dirived of human habitation and most if not all bites have been to keepers, both private and profesional. To my knowledge, all have recovered or atleast survived. (there was one account of a guy being tagged and haveing the effects or partial effects last some 6 yrs!!!)
All the best,
Jeremy
Regards,
Jeremy
