I've been looking for the past year or so for a mentor, but have no luck. I found that a local pet store provides classes but they won't start until January of next year. I was wondering if anyone is willing to take in an apprentice in order for me to learn first hand. Any leads would also be very helpful.
Thanks,
George

Consider it done. Just want to clarify on my location, I live during the week by the Med Ctr and during the weekend go see my parents in Conroe, thus the 2 zip codes.

Also let me just briefly explain my very limited experience. I have always loved and respected animals and nature. I started helping out my neighbor with his collection of reptiles at a young age in Florida. Later, during college I was an instructor at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo educating and presenting to the public on ecosystems and wildlife, including reptiles, mammals and birds of prey. I personally have a year experience with my own Bredli python.
Educational wise, I am on my last semester at UH doing my bachelors of science in Psych and Bio. I will pursue my education and get my masters in Public Health and possibly pursue a doctorate.

There are a number of herp folks in Houston. I would think that you can find someone there to help you out.
Try also contacting the zoo and see if the herp folks there have any recommendations. The Curator there is Stan Mays and the Assistant curator is Judith Bryja.
Good luck. If you are not successful soon, repost and we'll find you someone.

Mr. Hotle,
I actually contacted Judith Bryja a while back regarding volunteering, hopefully getting trained with venomous snakes, and if not any people she know around the area that wouldn't mind taking me under their wings. But she send me a polite reply saying Houston Zoo does not condone keeping venomous snakes in private collection and that volunteers do not handle venomous snakes. So I never pursued it. Would you happen to have Stan Mays email address, I'll try contacting him. Would greatly appreciate it if you could email me his address. Thanks again
Mr. Cole,
Thank you sir. I just really hope I find someone.
