I can't speak for the rest of the folks here, but I have much better success when I scout areas and set out tin or other "attractors" to catch snakes then I ever have road cruising. I guess I'm not very talented at road selection for road hunting, but it has always been disappointing to me. The best way I have found is to find likely habitat for your "target" species and then place tin near likely spots. It takes a while for snakes (in most cases) to find and get used to the tin before they'll use it. I also look around old barns, construction sites, trash dumps in the woods and other rodent attracting places to find snakes. Old car hoods in junk yards are particularly productive.. just remember to ASK permission before trespassing on land that belongs to someone else. Most people are eager to let you remove snakes if you tell them why our out looking...
Good luck!

I was in Wilminton for a few days and went about ten miles west on (I think) HWY 17, and found all kinds of cool stuff.
