Does anyone have knowledge of Illinois Hot Herp laws? I have found sources saying they can be kept with a permit, and others saying no. I can find no permit requirements or how to go about getting one. Anyone have any knowledge of Illinois law?

Try contacting:
Illinois Department of Conservation
Endangered Species Project Manager
524 S. Second St., Lincoln Tower Plaza
Springfield, IL 62701-1787
for clarification.
"The Illinois Dangerous Animals Act (reference: IL C.S. 720-585) specifically prohibits the keeping of any poisonous or life-threatening reptile. Although no definition of what constitutes a life-threarening reptile is included in this regulation, Illinois currently considers any adult (over six feet) constricting snake and all crocodilians to be life-threatening."
Quoted from "A Field Guide To Reptiles And The Law" by John P. Levell, 1995, Serpents TaleNatural History Book Distributors.
The book also says that venomous may be kept with a permit. So, in the face of controversy, contact the people who would have to issue the permit (see address above) and ask them the requirements instead of getting rumor and hearsay from folks who don't know for sure. Once you find out from the proper agency, please come back and let us know the truth as you have found it.

So far I have not gotten any help in that direction either. I think this is a situation they have either not dealt with often and are unfamilar, or don't want to encourage, or just plain don't know.

It's also interesting that on the Illinois DNR website the link that should led to info on the permits is down. I think that this is a hobby that the DNR does not support nor encourage and will stop it by just not knowing anything nor providing any info. Is there anyone in Illinois who has managed to get a permit to keep Hots?
