I read in the news, where a fire fighter from Dayton Ohio, died today from a Rhino Viper bite while taking it out to feed. Just a reminder of how careful we must be when keeping these awesome creatures!!!!!!!!!!!!

The biggest reason that he died was that he didn't have access to, or stock himself, the proper antivenom. Time is everything in a snakebite situation. This proves it.

I wonder why they couldn't keep him alive until the antivenom arrived, and why it took so long to get the antivenom to him.

From bite to death was 20 hours. The goal should've been to put the antivenom in him within the first 2 hours of the bite. People never seem to realize that any damage caused by snake venom is irreversible. Time is of the essence.

There's a lot we don't know. I've read only what was published in Dayton's newspaper today. The article doesn't mention the time of the bite nor how long thevictom might have waited to seek treatment. Nor does it mention how healthy or unhealthy the victim was to begin with. Sounds like they needed to call someone in to identify the snake too. That might have delayed treatment if they didn't know what they were dealing with. Very likely that the doctor's treating him in Ohio hadn't seen too many rhino viper bites either. And why would they? An experienced doctor can make all the difference. Venomous owners shouldn't just assume that antivenom will be readily available when accidents happen. Regardless, it's a tragedy and a lesson to all venomous keepers.

I understand it was allergic reaction and was unable to breathe within 15 minutes, which led to brain death, actual body death was 20 hours. ?
If he had his own serum and drugs to treat anaphalaxia he probably would have survived.
If one is not responsible enough to buy, import and stock ones own serum, one is going to get what is obviously comeing.
If one is not responsible enough to have own serum, one is not responsible enough to own venomous snakes...Period.
If we don't ALL start treating this hobby with utmost respect and responsiblity to the Legalities and moralities of keeping venomous snakes they will be governed for us and not available to future generations. So...get your own serum or get rid of the snakes! enough said!
