I met an experienced herper through a friend who seems very interested in learning the ropes on some of my venomous species. I'm looking for advice on how to manage that kind of arrangement from anyone who has taken on an apprentice in the past.
Right now, I have given him some basic reading material (reptilian biology, taxonomy, basic venomous biology and classification) and plan to have him write some tests so I can see his level of knowledge. I also plan to make the reading progressively more advanced and ensure that he passes subsequent written tests before teaching him any handling techniques.
I'm also going to get his medical history, allergies etc to include him in my bite protocols.
How does that sound so far? Am I leaving anything out?

Thank you Cris, I just read the whole article.
I have been dealing with "hots"for years but everybody should re-read the basics from time to time.
GREAT READ!!!!!!!
Thank you

Agreed...I have read that at least 5 times over the past couple years. Never hurts review/refresh.

Thanks Chris,
It's been so long since I've read Venom 101 that I almost forgot it existed!
I'll be sure to send him a copy.
Does anyone know what Allen Hunter's up to these days? Is he still in Toronto? I don't ever hear of him much in the Canadian zoo/venomus reptile keeping community.
Maybe I just don't know the right people...

I don't think it's the same guy (Ray Hunter vs Allen Hunter).
Good website though, I added it to my favourites!

Not that he needs anyone to speak for him, but since I can post this before he'll read it Allen Hunter no longer lives in North America and is away from reptiles at this time. He and his wife Susan have made huge contributions to the hobby and profession on various levels nonetheless.

Hey! Just got back from Egypt, and was alerted to this thread...
Does anyone know who put together this PDF? I've saved a copy, and I'm a bit surprised it's floating around here. Whoever made this did a nice job, and I'd like to say thanks. :)
After 25 years involvement with herps, Susan and I were becoming very disillusioned with the politics and the uglier aspects of the trade in general - not the animals - and decided to finally get out back in 2003. We're currently living in Norway, Susan is finishing her master's degree, and I'm continuing my lifelong profession as a guitar tech with my small repair shop and occasionally working backline for larger acts.
We do miss keeping animals sometimes (how can you not?), but it sure is nice not to have the onerous responsibility, and choose to travel and see them in the wild on trips.
