We have a albino green burm with an RI....we have had her to the vet twice and they gave her baytril and zithromax but neither really seemed to work. They seemed to work for a very short period of time but now she is back to not acting right. She ate a few times after the medications but now she stopped again. She is wheezing really bad and coughing up mucus. The vet said she had pneumonia the first time and said it may be scar tissie damage but i kinda find it hard to believe. Is there anything i can do for her or if i take her back to the vet is there a certain medication i should ask for.
Thaks for your time

Really need more info. Size/ age of snake, day/night temps its kept at, humidity levels, etc. I am not a veterinarian. But I've had similar issues a couple of times in the past with Baytril for URI. A friend suggested using Tylan50. It's available at any farm/feed store and Tractor Supply Stores without a prescription. I gave it a try and dosed it the same as Baytril, 5 mg/kg IM/PO q 24h. It worked great, I've been using it ever since. I've used it successfully on abscesses also. Just a suggestion. Take care, Marty

Marty,
Thanks for the info. She is approx 6 feer long and im not positive on her age but if i had to guess id say a year and a half to two years or so. She had and RI when we got her from a guy that ciukd no longer care for her and tried treating her for it but nothing seemed to help. The temps in her cage are approx 87 during the day and low 80 at night. Humidity is about 50%.
Thanks
Cody

Most reptile vets kept current with treating herps for RI and Infections usually treat with Fortaz instead of Baytril.
Of course running a sensitivity test takes out the guess work.

Cody, you said that the vet treated with baytril and zithromax. How long did they treat/how many doses? Was it one dose or several over time? They may have stopped too soon and never completely cleared it up. And Tim is correct with Fortaz replacing Baytril in many cases. You might ask your vet about trying it. Take care, Marty

We treated her with the baytril and zithromax over a period of time. I forget the exact time period but i want to say 3 weeks. I think the problem im running into is she is the only vet that deals with reptiles near me but i dont think she deals with to many so she may not know the proper treatment.Plus she is not a strictly reptile vet. She deals with many more cats and dogs than snakes. This is why i was looking for some kind of medication that i can request that may work better. Wd have gotten in rescue snakes before that baytril worked fine but it is not doing anytbing for her.i remember the one rescue burm we got that had stomatitis and a RI was treated with what i think was called covenia but he was taken to a vet that specializes in exotics. I was going to take this burm there but he is quite a ways away so that why i was looking for a medication to request before i traveled to this vet.

Marty,
How long (days) do you continue the 5mg/kg IM q 24h injections for approximately? I have read a few forums seeing that a lot of people are doing 50mg sub q injections. I tend to see things more your way because of the rapport you build on this site.
Thanks,
Tim

Tim, I go for 7 to 10 days. That is usually good. On a severe case like the one above seems to be, a longer regimen may be necessary. At the same time, raising the day/night temps slightly is also helpful, and try to keep the stress levels to a minimum, don't be handling a lot. I've also had a couple of vets tell me that if it's a bad case, to double the 1st dose. Again, I'm not a vet, this is just info that has worked for me. A good reptile vet would always be my 1st choice, although they're often times hard to come by. Take care, Marty

Marty,
I just wanted to let you know the tylan worked great. The burm is getting back to the health she should be in. She is still wheezing a little bit but is getting back to normal. She is eating and very alert. Thaks for giving me the info on using tylan. If we get anymore snakes in with an RI i will be using this and if it does not work ill try what Tim said.
Thnks again,
Cody
