I understand and respect the fact that a profile must be filled out crrectly and with the place you are from, or get your mail delivered too. I was speaking with a couple of members about this today. Some of us feel that anyone can make up a bogus name or lie about the place they are from. Such as this previous SCAMMER, Rehiss AKA Tamyrep AKA whatever is next??? This is a great site with many great people. Some of which I have met (in person due to classifieds) and became friends with. I think that there should be more to the criteria of a profile. I feel that besides filling out a profile. A person should be a member for a certian period of time before they are allowed to post in the classifieds. That time can be 3 monts, or 6 months (a kind of probationary period) or whatever the administration comes up with. Free classifieds should be a benefit for real members. Not for people who pass by and look to make a buck out off this hobby. This hobby gets enough exploitation as it is. Also new members should be required to log in at least once a week for their (probation period). It could also be possible to create a new member fourm that requires new members to introduce themselves and ask questions or talk a little bit about themselves. One website I belong to, which is not a reptile website requires one to make 4 posts before being allowed full access to the website. Im not saying we need to go that crazy. But new members can be given limited access to the wedsite until their probationary period is over. And one of those limitations should be the privilage of posting a free classified add. Im sorry, but all this nonsense with scam artists has really upset me. It may never be fully stopped, but we must make it as tough for them as possible.

I agree with this.
Another thought is to have a long standing member be a reference or vouch for a new member?

Speaking for myself, NOT as Classified ad manager. I'll let Chris or Karl handle SHHS's position even though I know what they are likely to say.
It's up to the buyer to ferret out who's a scam artist and who's legit. When dealing with a seller over the web get verifiable references before you send money. It's a small community where they have done business with somebody who's on this forum or one of the others.
Post a notice for people who have done business with them to contact you by email, NOT on the SHHS site with any feedback about the seller. Pay by PayPal, this way if there's a problem you're protected.

Yea, I cannot understand why any site would leave an ad up that is blatantly a scam. I have been scammed twice so far. Once on this site and once from kingssnake.com. Both times I used PayPal. There are many ways with which you can be scammed on PayPal. I am not going to go into specifics because I do not want to promote crime but once you understand the flaws in PayPal it becomes blatantly obvious that it is no different than sending money western union. It is really bad for sellers too, and in my opinion they are victimized for more than buyers. Another big problem isn't just blatant scams but unethical sales. I have had people sell me animals that were half dead and dying, animals that had parasites, animals with genetic defects, etc. I was not told about any of this up front. A board of inquiry like they have on fauna is good first step but even that has it's draw backs. Rather than trying to weed out the bad apples, which is impossible to do and always just ends up making a lot of good people suffer, it would probably just be better to promote the people that are known to be stand up guys. Maybe give them their own page or something. I have never scammed anyone but a lot of people get tired of herpetology fast and just stay in it for the money. Other people just become arrogant and think that they know best and want to try to control everything and just end up hurting a lot more people then they help. It's a messed up situation we are in and there is no easy answer but leaving up an ad from this Tammy guy that is obviously a scam is certainly interesting to say the least...

I would also just like to add that I have done business with 4 people who are members of this site and I keep in close contact with two of them and they are all stand up guys. One guy even sent me an animal that was DOA and when I told him that I would split the loss with him he refused and gave me a full refund. I had only talked to him a few times on the phone for about an hour before that. Another guy gave me animals at a super discounted price once after he realized I had some experience with them and was going to hold them for the long term and he even drove about 50 miles out of his way to come and meet me even when I told him I would drive the entire way. What I gave him for very fine snakes that were worth about $350.00 probably bought him gas for his ride home and maybe dinner. So it's not all that bad. There are some really good people on this site who will do right by you.

I have never ordered an animal from someone and never will. I've never been scammed. But if I ever did, I would never order an animal from someone that I didn't know, or someone who you know has been doing it for years and has a great reputation. But basically, if I can't buy it face to face with the seller and personally see the animal before purchase, I don't need it. Take care, Marty
