I see a guy on Youtube named Viperkeeper squirting water on the heads of his snakes. Should I be doing this, or is a water bowl good enough?

I've done it before with my pigmys just as a reassurance thing to make sure they are drinking. But as long as your snakes can find the water bowl its not mandatory, but not a bad idea either. Really though just a daily mist will work just as well

Misting isn't required for most snakes - mainly just for certain arboreals and other species that mostly drink rainwater from leaves or their own bodies - but a gentle squirt of water on the head can often defuse a strong feeding response or an overly curious/alert snake when you need to work with them.

Chris, Viperkeepers method works well, however, remember that he also has vast amounts of experience. Also, it says in your profile that you live in Georgia. That would mean that your limited to the venomous snakes of Georgia. (which I love personally) That would include some very large pit vipers like EDB's and Canebrakes, and Cottonmouths. I'm not sure I would want to get my hand close enough to the business end of one of those with a water bottle to squirt some H20 at it. Just sayin. Take care, and BE CAREFUL! Marty

Both seem to be doing really well as is. This morning I saw the Copperhead chilling on the side of the water dish and the Pygmy always poops right next to the water dish. I assume both know where the water is.

Yea I just made a habit out of misting because I have a Massasauga in a 75 gallon tank and whenever he does seem pass by one of the 2 water dishes he will drink for a good minute or so, so I always mist them just to be safe

I don't mist my Copperheads. They keep very secretive and the only way I know that they go to the water bowl is that they poop in it making water changes a frequent regimen.

I mist my Agkistrodon when simulating seasonal changes, typically in the spring and fall though during the summer when big T storms hit, I open up everything from pictigaster to bilineatus and mist heavily. Lock ups and breeding is almost instantaneous and this method has provided me with over a decades worth of very fertile agkistrodon breedings. Also has similar effects on things like crotalus, sisturus, vipera, bothrops, bitis, naja etc to lesser extents. It is good to keep in mind many reptiles hydrate a variety of ways therefore we usually offer several methods here, in order to best simulate external weather conditions for favorable years/clutches for that matter. It is very effective in breeding numerous agkistrodon and other species.

You should'nt have to mist either of these snakes! Offer a shallow bowl of water and they should have no problem at all locating it. If you find it necessary to mist them, there must be some sort of a humidity issue. I used to keep a very large private collection of venomous snakes in Florida and did a lot of collecting and never had issues with my pygmies. I also kept a large private collection of massasauga's,easterns, and westerns, and a few deserts. None of these relatives of the pygmies ever needed misting! Just provide them with a healthy mouse diet and some clean water in a bowl!!! Hope this helps.
