I plan on getting one of these snakes at the end of the summer around August, and I was wondering what the living conditions were for this snake....
I've looked online but I haven't found much info, everything I find is on sidewinders. I figure since they are a dessert spp I shouldn't make water available continuously. But, if anyone has kept this species successfully could you please email me.
Thanks Thad

Thanks yeah I had figured on only giving them water once a week, but I wasn't sure about the basking spot... This snakes are nocturnal so it doesn't make sense to me to have to have a basking light for them since in the wild they aren't out when the sun is up.
i was going to build a cave out of clay with an under tank heater to provide heat and a hiding spot and then some rocks to lay on at night.

I produced 18 eggs last year. All hatched and healthy. I kept my breeders in a 150 gal long with about 6 to 8 inches of sand. One end at around 95° with a basking spot of 113° and the other end at around 78° to 82° lots of hides from end to end. No water bowl. Just soaked them about once every three months. Which they hated!!! Lol of course all this was after raising them more so the female and slowly introducing them because the female was a snapper. The male was a cb proven guy already. Now my buddy Joe in penn has them and they have been copulating again and I'm waiting for a new pair of younglings to start over again. Best of luck with them. They are fantastic creatures.

Watering them weekly isn't necessary and when my girl was gravid she spent 90% of her time day and night under the heatlight basking. They were very active day and night year in and year out.

One last thing. If your feeding f/t that's how mine got a lot of their water intake. Offer it dripping wet and they'd drink off it then eat it. Best of luck.

I've never worked with this species, but I would imagine they would do well with an occasional misting, like most other desert species.

Well I like to enrage my animals as little as possible. Misting them just outright pi$$es them off. Lol Raising them over five years and having every egg hatch tells me I did right by them. Just hope u have the same luck.

@varivenom I realize it's an old thread but u seem very knowledgeable w/ sidewinders. Anyway I recently got one and was wondering what substrate do u recommend? I'm currently using grounded English walnut shells by zilla. I have a behavior question too...she's my first desert snake it looks like she maybe trying to dig a hole to burrow. She pulls the "sand" w/ her chin towards her direction. Hope that makes sense. Just curious to know exactly what she's trying to do.

This thread is about cerastes cerastes aka desert horned viper. An african species. Crotalus cerastes is very cool as well. I have caight and kept many. Never tried to breed them though. Shifting sand just seems to be a hobby of them. Btw I did keep my cerastes on sand. Its their natural substrate anyway. Never an issue with it. Back to the burrowing. Do you provide a hide?
