I have one Pygmy and I really enjoy having him. I think they are a pretty awesome little snake. I want to put together a large set up that is very realistic. Something custom made about the size of a 125 gallon fish tank. If I can, what would be a good number of pygmies to put in there, and can I mix Red Pygmies with Dusky Pygmies?

Houseing snakes together should never be done except when put together for breeding.By keeping snakes together create to many problems such as feeding, one always wants what the other has ,and takeing the snakes out to put them in seperate containers to feed is not beneficial. Cleaning of cages is another problem,if one snake deficates in a cage you have to contend with multiple animals. Either one of the first to reasons shohld be rason enough due to the fact that it puts you in contact with the snakes to many times. Also cageing different types of snakes may cause cross breeding ,even though this does happen in the wild it should be avoided in captivity, pure is always better. Also canabalistic response can happen,I have seen many snakes lost in this fashion such as Bitis,Bothrops Bothriopsis ,Bothrechis to mention a few.Keep in mind Pygmys are just snappy snakes in general, its not worth the risks.I would invest in small 5 gallon aquariums with slideing tops that are pad lock able. You will enjoy it alot more, and it will be safer. Above all always be careful for your safety, and those around you. Chris

I keep fairly large cages with pygmys together in natural type setups. I've done it for years and have never had an issue. But I keep the Duskys and the Carolinas separated, I don't have any reason to believe that they wouldn't get along, I just keep 1 species/sub species per cage. I do separate them to feed. That is a must. Not a big issue for me, and they don't seem to mind. I've heard of them cannibalizing, But have never experienced it. Also they breed every year, and I don't do anything special like cooling them down or anything. Just don't overcrowd them, and if you ever try feeding them while they're all in there, you'll regret it. Take care, Marty

I'm with Marty. Feeding multiple snakes in a singe enclosure is asking for trouble. Triple that when the snakes are hots. For that reason, all my snakes (non-hot)are solo. They are not fed during conjugal visits.

I also have done it for many years (over 20). Never had a problem. I also seperate for feeding. I am not a fan of mixing species, But in a large enough enclosure you can mix certian crotalids that overlap in nature if they are similar size. This happens to be my opinion and my experience and what has worked for me. thers may disagree.

What are the natural social behaviors of Pygmies? It has been documented in other species such as C. atrox and C. horridus, as well as A. contortrix, and some who have kept them in groups say it benefits them to have the interaction.

I'm not aware of any studies on the natural social behaviors of Pygmies ever being done. With a Google search, I found a couple mentions of it in other Pygmy/snake studies, but nothing specific. They seem to like being together in my experience, and often share hides. Take care, Marty
