Hey everybody!
So this may sound strange, but I dont know all that much about USARK other than the fact that they try to prevent anti-reptile related legislation from being pushed through. However there seems to be quite a bit of controversy surrounding them from keepers on other sites and forums. Now Im a see it to believe it kinda guy and it seems like the negative speculation and hearsay is loosely based malarkey that has spawned from legitimate concern. However, as we all know that general principal seems to surround our hobby quite a bit.
Now I personally have never donated to USARK or PIJAC directly but I was just curious as to why there are so many skeptics about these organizations? And what are their public opinions that are regarded as so controversial in the reptile industry? I have also heard that one of the big questions raised are about what they do with their donations and other funding and the lack of either ability or willingness to show the public and donating members of the organization.
Now understand Im not bad mouthing them in any way Im just trying to learn more about them. Because they after all are taking on the fedeal government to protect our hobby from unconstitutional federal laws and mandates that are fueled by a general fear combined with unfortunate circumstances (most noteably they python "epidemic" in FL). Any two cents regarding this matter would be most appreciated....
Thanks and stay safe, Eric V.

Which forums and keepers are you talking about exactly, and what are there concerns specifically ? Can you post links to the discussions that you are talking about ?

I was looking up information on USARK the other day and came across this. The opinions seem to be for them primarily but with caution. I was just curious as to why there would be skeptics and if anyone else felt this way about them. Like I said Im just curious. The members in the posts may or may not be reputable but at the same time it had me wondering.
Thanks, Eric

All the author of the article stated is that he supports USARK but doesn't support everything they do organizationally and with their expenditures. However, we all probably think we could run an organization better then the person in charge until we get in the drivers seat. He then states that although he disagrees with them on some things they are the best we have and that we should support them. This doesn't at all seem like "quite a bit of controversy surrounding them from keepers on other sites and forums." What else is it that you have found ?

I have heard it from people aside from just what I had read online. My statement also included my own addition of questioning about where their funding goes. I understand that dealing with the govt is not an inexpensive thing. But considering the amount of money that I would assume they take in, I don't doubt that its used properly, but I would be curious to see what their budget and everything else looks like. I would also like to see a list of their opinions regarding the keeping of large constrictors (obviously they support private ownership or they wouldn't have fought the ban), venomous, crocodilains, and other exotic and similar species facing national bans.
I appreciate your response but questioning the source of my questions seems to answer nothing. No disrespect or anything but are you a member of USARK? I think someone involved with the organization would have a better understanding of where the funding goes and what the organizations stance is on different things.
Thanks, Eric V.

Who are these "people" that you are hearing this from and what reason do they have for questioning what USARK does with its funding ? I am aware that your statement includes its own line of questioning but what reason do you have to question USARK ? This seems like a "manufactured" concern. Are you working for PETA or the Humane Society ?

Not my concern anymore as I sold my whole collection, but I was told by someone who's been in this business many many years and mentored hundreds of current hot keepers and worked with several states on writing and preserving our laws and rights that most of the so called animals wellfare and conservation departments are bogus and take in money that goes to no real purpose. I don't know where it goes myself. None the less I don't support any government regulated or even partially funded organizations. Don't trust our government anymore. Lacking in intelligence and morals to much for my taste. Its so easy. If everybody would just practice good methods and people who have no business keeping exotics wouldn't. We would not need to concern ourselves with big brothers interference , but alas our country has just gotten WAY to big for its little britches. Asking people to be responsible for their own actions? Ha! In this day and age good luck! Elected once shame on him. Elected twice shame on us. We would deserve a serious beating if it happens again. I'm kinda glad I sold my collection. Now I can move over seas if need be. No tie downs. I wish all of my fellow hot keepers the best of luck. This is now not just a hobby but a quest for its survival by any means. Best advice I was given. Don't trust ANYONE, but eachother.

Yea, I agree 100%. In fact, after looking at what the United States government has done to the reptile industry has really opened my eyes to the tyranny of big government. I could only imagine what these people are doing to other industries. You have people who would probably stand on a chair if they seen a garter snake righting policy on which animals I can keep and how I should keep them. Then you have groups out there like The Humane Society who are radical left wing liberals that believe that no one should be able to keep any pet trying to use Federal and State governments as instruments to turn their ideologies into law. It's completely insane. That is why I laugh at the fools in our hobby who preach that we should "police ourselves" as if that matters. They have no idea what they are up against. They will only understand when after all their hard work some government beaurocrate comes and rips their animals right out of their homes. Or makes insane regulations so that they are not worth keeping. I agree with you that we should stick together and support groups like USARK which I am a member of. However , I would love to know where you plan I fleeing to so I could have a plan B because from what I hear, it's the same all over Europe.

Any number of places. Family in Germany, Columbia etc. Friends in Ireland and downunder. Spin a globe and pick a place. If it comes to it I'm ready. To many whiny bleeding heart pompous wind bags for my taste. For instance in Ireland there are no property taxes and no water bills. Water was put here for all! How can you charge for it? Did mother earth sign over her rights or something? Don't think I've ever seen a price tag on a lake or river while hiking. Just an example. Our country is just tttttttttooooooooo greedy. I'm glad my grandfathers not alive to see it. He'd be ashamed especially after the years spent fighting and defending this country. Don't get me wrong I love where I'm from. I just don't respect or trust it anymore.

John, let me explain something to you, I have been on this site for quite a long time. I personally know a few of the members myself. Any one of them can tell you I am not part of any of thoes radical left groups like HSUS or PETA. I consider that to be a huge insult. I have not direspected you by questioning any of your morals or anything else for that matter. I simply asked a question. I understand their mission and that USARK needs help. I also understand that they do quite a bit for the herpeticulture in general. However Im someone who doesnt donate to an organization that doesnt come out and explain what the funding they recieve goes towards. I also agree with Tim. Politically funded organizations are often completely out of line and that some of these laws wouldnt be created if it werent for the irresponible individuals who go and purchase animals they have no business keeping. So I do believe permit systems should be in place in all states weeding out the irresponsible keepers from the dedicated. However as we know this isnt the case. the govt oversteps boundaries all the time. This to me is unacceptable. I guess what Ive been trying to say is that I wish there were more organizations pro-reptile industry allowed to speak and defend us. Heaven know there are plenty allowed to speak freely for the other side.
