Sounds like a stroke of luck was tossed his way. Glad he pulled it out. Would have been a horrible loss and more powerful ammo for the press.

I particularly like the comment I read somewhere. When asked how many times he had been bitten before, he declined to say and said that bites are not boy scout badges.

My opinion on this, is any news of an expert making a mistake and getting bit is bad press for our hobby. Liberals will take this to the farm, they will say, If an expert gets bitten by a venomous snake what about the people they do not consider experts, and they will seek more bans or an outright ban on all ownership. Now thats extreme, and I cant say it will happen, but bad press is bad press. Because fact of the matter is, a snake is always going to be a snake. If a bite occurs in this hobby, it is our fault. I dont consider my self a snake expert and never will. I dont think such a thing exist, because the fact is we are always learning with these animals. But I cant stress enough, for Mark O Shea to make a mistake and get tagged, due to his name alone, is very bad press for our surviving hobby. And HE SHOULDVE KNOWN BETTER, BECAUSE YOU DONT GET BIT UNLESS YOU $%#$ UP! period

If you get bit it is not always your fault or the snakes. Accidents happen. Mark is not from our country or based in it. It barely made any press here at all. The most prolific hot keepers I know are also the people I know to have been bit the most. I myself have been the recipient of 3 tags in my life. None of which were the fault of the animal or myself. I harbor no ill will towards any animal for its natural actions. Ill use my first experience getting bit as an example. I was 12 at a summer camp. Our cabin went on a nature hike. Upon crossing a small shallow stream a med. sized cottonmouth crossed our paths. The councilor of our cabin attempted to flip it out of our path instead of letting it be. He used the end of his walking stick to flip it. It hooked around the end and was projected directly at my face. As I put my hands up to block it I received one fang in my right hand. Thus not my fault or the snakes fault. Just one quickly unemployed idiotic councilor. Should have just left it alone.

Yeah in that scenario it was not your fault. Majority of the time bites can be prevented. But sure there are always different circumstances. and Yes I agree, he shouldve left it alone, very wreckless lol.
Have a good one man.

Yep the cottonmouth bite I think most will agree was legitimate. I also think most would agree though if you are keeping and working with venomous snakes and you get bit, it is always 100% your fault and never the snakes.

What ever you heard in the media is not true. Spoke with Mark about the incident while catching Adders in the UK with him on Sept 14th. It was blown way out of proportion by the media as usual. Sleeping Beauty's fangs never touched Mark. Venom got into an open wound. Some time after the incident, he experienced mild effects of the exposure and went to hospital to play it safe. He did not receive A/V although it was with him.
