There is a lot of good primary literature out there to read before you start. Google Diller and Wallace for some early work on N. Pacifics. A lot of studies have followed. Here is a quick utube that's not too bad.

You really have to decide what kind of questions you want to answer before you start.

I've seen dabs of nail polish used during a survey to avoid counting the same snake twice (durable and pretty weatherproof), but I'm a bit skeptical about any sort of paint for a movement study since I would expect it to be gone after the first shed or two. Some sort of dye that penetrates the skin might work better? Just a thought.
Of course, without some sort of radio tracking, what are your chances of finding enough of the same snakes more than once to get meaningful data?

Scale clipping ,as well as keeping a photo log of pattern annomalies like is done with whales, sharks, otters and many other animals.Clipping a small amount of skin in a pattern from belly scales has and is still used .It works well does not harm the animal and heals after a few sheds.Every snake has a marking that can be logged to identify it for study.KEEP AN ACCURATE PHOTO LOG .
