I like the way Vice does their documentaries, but I nearly lost my mind watching this guy.

Without getting into the SI debate and what it may or may not be doing to the hobby. I can look past the "why" and appreciate someone pursing their interests and excepting some personal risk in doing so.
Based on this clip, there was no mention of any type log or record being kept. No defined objectives. IF this guy did stumble on to a break through it wouldnt do any good unless there was a way to duplicate his results.
He seems more interested in the notoriety of being able to say he injects himself with venom than making a real contribution.

Patrick,
I couldn't agree more. We have a reasonable assumption that SI works. We derive antivenin from the same principles. If sheep make antibodies to venom so should we, and it worked for Bill Haast. But that doesn't mean we should all go out and start shooting venom like this guy.
If he at least presented a decent, well thought out argument about why he does it I might have a different opinion. It's unfortunate that both sides of the story aren't represented in this film. I would like to see some of the scientific heavy-hitters like Dr. Wuster, BGF or many of the other experts on this site weighing in on camera about this kind of activity and injecting some rational, evidence-based ideas to the conversation.
The one thing I found interesting was the comment the 'star' of the documentary made about having the telomeres of a 27 year old. Maybe someone here can weigh in on that. Is there any evidence to suggest that any components of venom can lengthen telomeres?

Coming from the UK, I think I can provide a little more info about Steve.
Steve Ludwin holds a DWAL in London and claims to have been practicing SI for over twenty years. Now I will agree with the above post as Bill Haast showed us how snake venom can turn the medical industry on its head with venom-derived cures.
However, Steve seems to be insisting on posting every interview, every video he posts on youtube and every photo he has on pretty much every British reptile forum there is. People have asked him genuine and interesting questions and he answers with either links to interviews with virtually no value or in his latest post, he had a link to a youtube video where he uses a pringles tube as a smoking pipe. Now, I have nothing against the man, but he seems to be quite the attention whore. Evading questions comes in at a close second.
If his study had any scientific value then I would generally support it but as many people in the UK pointed out he does not work with any scientist and doesn't record anything whatsoever. So I do not see the scientific benefit to it.
Just my two cents...
Regards,
Andy

Andy,
He actually posted replies to Youtube posts on the documentary a week after it aired. I saw lots of meaningful posts that posed lots of interesting questions, but he only decided to answer the superfluous and unintelligent ones.
He does seem like an attention whore.
How can he keep his DWAL with activity like this? He admitted to having to be rushed to hospital. Who is the presiding authority on the DWALs and can they be taken away for misconduct?

For the record: I am NOT defending this guy (see previous post for personal opinion). Having said that, before suggestions / information, etc. on how to revoke someones permits is posted on an open and public forum. I would respectfully remind everyone a little discretion goes a long way. The more these instructions are replicated and published just increases the chances the same information is used to potentially harm all keepers. I prefer not to give AR activists seeds for thought, let them do their own homework.
Respectfully,
PTK
