I've got a few ideas and plans for building an outdoor enclosure for C. horridus, and was looking for input. I want to make it a year round enclosure, with some sort of hibernaculum to keep em cool in the summer, and to let them brumate in the winter. Has anybody here done it? The enclosure I'm looking to build will likely hold 1.2 adult snakes, so enclosure size recommendations are highly appreciated, keep it reasonable.
For the Records,
I live in The most Southeastern part of Virginia
Mountain phase horridus; timbers, are legal in the state of Virginia, Lowland phase horridus; Canebrakes, are not (W/O permits). I am looking to keep black phase Timbers.
Thanks!

I am probably not qualified to answer the question but I would imagine for liability reasons you would want it totally enclosed in some form of escape proof enclosure I would also probably recommend having the walls be in the ground several feet to prevent burrowers from getting in and conversely them out
my other thought would be the tops probbably like a prison wall you would want a 45 degree inward slope to prevent them from climbing up and out
how big a space are you looking at

Let me say that I have not done this but it is a cool idea. I think keeping the snakes in would be the easiest part. Keeping human and pet out way more difficult. I would assume liability wise this would be similar to having a swimming pool in the back yard with a neighborhood full of kids!! Two or three good sized plastic containers (big enough for all three if they wanted to get in it) buried at slightly different depths and connected to the surface with PVC tubing. Outdoor thermometers that send the temps to a central unit would be great as is the potential to have a heating unit buried (just in case). The razor wire to keep the kids out may affect the aesthetic appearance though. Good luck and if you decide to do it make sure you send lots of pics.

So I channeled my GoogleFu on the topic of outdoor reptile housing and found some material that you might be able to use as a starting point to further develop your idea.
