I know it's from 2009 but I just seen this poll: In your oppinion, what is the biggest threat to herpetology? And the answer with the most votes was: Ignorant legislation, loss of ownership rights, bans, etc. with "Habitat destruction" coming in 2nd. With that said I wonder three things. 1st, with all of these legislators making laws about reptiles with absolutely zero interest or experience in keeping reptiles are we all destined to become criminals because we like to keep venomous snakes as pets rather then traditional animals ? 2nd, why is the pet trade "or the illegal pet trade" as animal rights groups like to call it, blamed for shrinking populations of animals when overpopulation, loss of habitat, and pollution account for the vast majority of the damage done ? It's so ridiculous that these animal rights groups try to blame us for conserving snakes privately and domestically when it's clear that failure on the part of policy makers is clearly the issue. Third, why is that all of these people feel that there is no room for the private conservation of exotic animals in the home when its blatantly clear that the government and public institutions are in no way capable of helping even a fraction of the animals that are in trouble ? It really seems like they are actually trying to destroy the planet.

1 Poor ethics of many collectors 2 Obvious demand of private ownership. 3 Many professinal institutions saying that only they can have and you are unqualified. 4 And a goverment that thinks you need to be controled.

It's really sad that people have these misconceptions because in the end the environment pays the price. Demeaning private conservationist doesn't address any of the real issues nor does it solve any of the real problems. It's just the media and politicians making a living off their fear porn.
