I realize this is off-topic, but I've been here for a few years and respect that many of the folks here are very knowledgeable about many different of our reptilian friends.
I'm beginning research into helping my young (just shy of 10 yrs.) son further his interest in animals in general and reptiles in particular. My wife and I are considering letting him have a smallish lizard on his birthday. He has done a good job of helping to care for our two cats and one dog over the last year or so and has had a small aquarium as well.
As I said, I'm beginning my research, but it looks like either a gecko or an anole might be good choices. I'd be most appreciative if some in here might have a bit of advice on relative hardiness, activity (how active they are), ease of care, etc. One of my initial thoughts is trying to train my son to care for the animals without handling them, helping solidify the idea of viewing specimens in the wild safely and encourage safe practices for husbandry should he decide to one day venture into more delicate and/or venomous creatures.
Thanks for all who post...

I would go with a bearded dragon. Easy to maintain, and most are very easy to handle. They're not too expensive as long as you stay away from the morphs, and there is a TON of info on them in books and on the internet. Check them out, they make great pets, especially for a beginner. I bought one for my daughter and she had it for 9 years. Take care, Marty

Thanks Marty...
Apologies for my tardiness...I haven't been able to check in before now...
Bearded Dragons were certainly a thought; his teacher has one in the classroom, so it may still be a possibility...
Thanks!
