Honestly, I stated multiple times on this thread that practicing with any similar snake will probably suffice. This is because most people can't find a mentor and most people probably will not be able to find a venomoid. Preferentially, I would rather practice with any cobra when training to keep any cobra than any other snake. However, I under promise and over deliver that's why when I train people I use a venomoid. Not because I need to but because I want to. In my opinion I just generally feel that training with a venomoid monocle cobra is decent training when you are planning to keep any cobra. For some snakes like A. Squamigera I wouldn't even use a venomoid because squams are a relatively easy species to keep. All I am saying is if you want a mamba and have little mamba experience it would be ideal to practice with a venomoid black mamba. I understand that you are strongly against this and I respect your opinion but in my personal experience I have not seen anything that would lead me to believe that my animal was in some way suffering or abused. The snake is fine and this helps protect PEOPLE so I have no qualms against it. If I did see something l I would be the first crucify it because I like snakes and either way it doesn't affect me because I like keeping hot snakes that's why I keep hot snakes. Venomoids suck all the fun out of hobby but they are good to practice with.

Some venomoids are not venomoids. Ok, so drop a mouse in the cage if it dies it's still hot if it doesn't it's a venomoid case closed. Although, for the record, some venomoids can still kill mice with their bite if their teeth hit an organ and also because their saliva by itself can actually kill mice but doesn't effect humans.

You know, I was considering diving into some species of Naja (especially siamensis), but Aspidelaps scutatus is such a neat little snake, I might look into getting one. Beautiful coloration. It may have a bad attitude, but its diminutive size would keep me from getting in over my head.

So before you let people train with the venomoid cobra do you tell them its a void? Cause if you do that would pretty much be useless training. If they know it can't kill them it would make them think differently while handling it. The only way it would help train them is if they thought a bite could kill them. A void cobra is just a big corn snake lol.

jparker1167 - I could not agree with you more but you are wasting your time pointing that out.

My first elapid was 6 months into keeping venomous, it was a Naja siamensis.
If you have successfully kept venomous snakes for sometime, then you shouldn't have any problem working with cobras. You already have the necessary common sense.
Start off with a hatchling/juvi. Good luck.

I figured that too Billy, just thought i would mention it.. i just got a Ptyas carinatus, it's a huge rat snake that is always ready to bite,l. He is about 7 feet of the possible 12-13 feet they can get. Its the closest non venomous snake to a cobra i have seen... actually all the cobras i have kept were easier to handle lol..
