Is there any way to estimate size and type of snake by the distance between the fang marks. Our Sanctuary lost a mini-donkey and a rabbit to a venomous snake today The bites happened within an hour or so of each other and in the middle of the day. We are in Corpus Christi texas and so do have rattlesnakes but I have never seen a big one here. The fang marks are over 1 3/4" apart on each animal. We were unable to find the snake yet but I just wanted some idea of what we are looking for.

Corpus Christi is within the range of both the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, and the Timber ( Canebrake ) Rattlesnake.

We saw 4 yesterday and killed 2. You are right, they are Western Diamondbacks. None of the 4, neither the 2 small ones that fled or the 2 larger that stood their ground EVER rattled. The largest we killed was 4' 1" long but the spread between the fangs was just under an inch when spread apart laterally. I think we still have a big snake somewhere. In 10 years I have only seen one rattler and now 4 in one day. Do you think the drought is bringing them in or do we possibly have a den area somewhere? My confidence and peace of mind is shaken.

Coming on here and talking about killing snakes is pretty fucking ignorant. Maybe you should try a rattlesnake roundup site where you might be welcome. Most likely you're just a troll trying to get your jollies.

I am sorry to have offended you. There was no intent to sound boastful or bragging, I am truly concerned for the lives of animals and people. I suppose that you know of a non-lethal way to prevent the influx of venomous and obviously aggressive snakes from killing our animals and potentially volunteers and their children. I was under the mistaken impression that the members of this group were not only knowledgeable but also realistic. Please remove me from your group, thanks.

I'm sure it wouldn't take much effort to find someone in your area, especially Texas, that would be able to come to your place and capture then relocate the snakes without killing them.

While I understand the sentiment about killing snakes, profanity is not called for. There are a lot of people who do not appreciate snakes on their property who come here for information. Directing someone to a roundup page is not what this site is about.
Finding someone to remove snakes from property is not always easy. I, and a lot of people who use this site, do it for free. I do not know of any in any specific areas of Texas except near Abilene.
I would recommend starting a new question/thread on this site asking for any recommendations to someone who would come to do venomous snake removals in your area. You might get lucky.

Thank you for your reasonable response and suggestion. We are loathe to kill any animal, we have even removed non-venous snakes from other properties to keep them from being killed but we are not capable of dealing with aggressive venomous snakes. It was insensitive for me to post here and ignorant of me to assume that my fear for the many children and "city adults" who visit our sanctuary daily would be appreciated by your members. I was also remiss in not explaining the efforts we had taken to have them removed humanely.
I understand Mr. Martin's response, as well, though I think it was inappropriate for him to email me his venom privately. He, like the snakes we are dealing with, struck without first rattling. Unfortunate.
Again, please remove me from the group.
