I have a green phase timber rattler and he is feedning on frozen/thawed mice (2). I have tried to feed weaning rats but he will not eat them. Just wondering what are you feeding your Timbers.

I would continue with the mice. If the snake is thriveing i would not bump the system. Feeding rats Will not be an advantage unless more readlly available.

Its normal. I have coppers that wont eat fresh killed mice only frozen thawed. Sometimes snakes get used to a particular item and stick to it. If its not broke dont fix it.

Thanx to everyone who replied. I was only hoping to switch him to rats only because I breed them for food and have them available. I have an order of mice that should get on Thursday.

I have a few timbers myself, and I also understand the convenience of being able to feed a prey item you raise yourself. I raise game chickens and always have an abundance of chicks hatching. It's nice to have a snake or snakes that readily take what is offered them, but unfortunately not always the case. One thing you could try is to begin the feeding session with a mouse and then the rat. Now of course this depends on the size of your snake. If he's only taking 1 mouse at a feeding this wont help, but if your feeding 2 or three at a time it might. I started my feeding with the desired food item of choice, and then a less desirable after the first or second item was down. It seemed I had a better result after the feeding drive was " turned On". This may or may not work for you or your snake, I have also had snakes in the past that would not eat dark colored mice ever, but readily take white. So you might just have a mouse eater on your hands. Good luck,

Hey thanx 187. I will try that. The person i bought him from said that he wouldn't eat F/T but he's been pounding them down for about 2 mnths now. I will try your method but I am not pressed now that my current order of feeders have arrived, which included 50 extra large mice.
