If they decide to stop flights from West Africa we might not see any popular species in the private snake trade for a while. Might drive the price sky high for snakes such as west African gaboons that are fairly common place now. If they do stop flights from Africa I am sure fish and wildlife will use the opportunity to exaggerate the situation and try to extend the ban for exotic animals.

I agree. Stop flights because of the worst virus ever. The liberals will never go for that. I'd be more concerned with animals passing the virus to us. Apparently dogs can be infected. Could you imagine being careful and lucky not to get bit by your mamba, but getting infected with the virus by cleaning a cage with fecal matter. Getting tagged by the snake would be a walk in the park. At least you have a chance with treatment. We as exotic keepers, wether snake or lizard or whatever. Take many dangerous risks we never even think about. Especially with wild caught animals. For example. When I was a kid I worked in a pet store. We got wc ball pythons in all the time. They were loaded with these crazy African ticks. We would pull them off.( the ticks we found). Thinking back if one of these ticks bit someone it could have been a disaster. They have paralytic ticks in Africa. It's almost like the less you know the better you are. But inorder to be Old and wise. One must be young and foolish. ( and lucky enough to survive) Remember this virus has been a problem for many years there. It only cause it wound up on our land that it seems so dangerous. When the truth is. It always was. We were just clueless and not exposed. Forget the price of snakes. High or low. The coffin has no pockets or cages for snakes. What we need to do is concentrate on captive breeding more than importing.

The fact that they haven't stopped flights from Africa is completely insane. It has led many on the right such as Alex Jones of infowars.com to argue that the government is intentionally trying to cause a pandemic so that they can bring in marshal law, confiscate our guns (and snakes lol j/k) and pose as saviors. At this point it's hard to argue the government isn't trying to intentionally kill us all with Ebola because there really is no other way to explain their insane policies of turning off the basic default protocols. This is way more insane then stupid liberals being nice to the detriment of us all. I truly believed at this point the government would have stopped flights from Africa especially in the exotic pet trade which I am a big supporter of.
What is even more bizarre and insane is that Inclusion body disease (IBD) the new virus that has been killing all of our snakes, turns out to be an Ebola family virus. Check out this article:
http://theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com/2012/08/15/new-deadly-highly-contagious-ebola-family-virus-found-in-snakes/
You really can't make this stuff up.

It's not in the Filovirus family, It was said to have one common gene with the Filoviruses. Big difference.

I don't think they know exactly what family it is in yet. Another Artie I read stated:
"One of its genes is actually most closely related to the same gene in Ebola virus," he says. "So this virus is actually a mashup, or a genetic mix of arenaviruses and Ebola virus."
I found the article here: http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2012/08/14/158501873/how-a-virus-in-snakes-could-offer-clues-to-ebola-in-humans
The fact that this virus is even related to Ebola with all that is going on is crazy. Since arena viruses have until now only been found in mammals also lends support to the idea that this may end up being in the Ebola family.

Come on people. Don't we have enough real issues to worry about.? Yes, it is probably safe to say that, in some sense, IBD is related to Ebola. I am related to Ebola, if you trace back far enough, and almost certainly have some genes in common with it.
In the U.S. very few of us have funeral practices that require us to wash our dead by hand, let alone in our drinking water. Not many of us are in the habit of eating undercooked fruit bats (or dogs) either.
Ebola is NOT the kind of threat here that it is in West Africa.

Yes Larry is correct. Ebola has been around a long time. It's just because it's on our shores now that people are freaking out. The Doctor in New York has recovered from it. Yes it still is serious. But I'd be more worried about other sicknesses more. If you must soak your dead reptiles in your drinking water make sure you pass it through your Britta filter before drinking. Lol ;)
