I had some bugs in one of my snake cages. Not mites, they looked like fruit flies. I bought a product called mite off from LLL Reptile supply. The guy said keep the snakes out 1 hour after you spray. I have a holding cage with bushes and everything set up. I put them in there for a little over 24 hours. When I woke up this morning I put them back in the cage I sprayed with mite off. When I came home from work this afternoon they were all dead. I had 6 snakes die and two have severe neurological damage.
The 6 snakes that died were the ones I put back in the cage. They were 6 very nice Squamigera which included a red, gold, orange, blue and odd brown striped snake. All my hold backs from this year. The 2 that got the neurological damage were rhino vipers. They were not even in the same cage as the squams they were in the cage underneath. I didn't take them out because I didn't spray that cage. They are fucked up and can't move they just wiggle back and forth. They will probably die tonight. I am pissed the F***** off.

I'm Sorry to hear that John. Arboreal vipers are very sensitive to those chemicals. Those flies you are referring too are most likely the ones that burrow under the snakes skin and lay eggs or larva. I don't know their names off hand. They are actually a problem with the genus Atheris. I've seen them on Netchei. The ones that look like they may die will most likely be better off if you euthanize them in the freezer. As horrible as it seems. I wish you had contacted me or posted something before you used that stuff. I use something else. That seems to work good sop far.

The fly's weren't parasites I literally think they were fruit flies because I had a mouse that a snake didn't eat and I couldn't get out the cage. I didn't want it to starve so I put a piece of fruit in there for it to eat. I took it out but after that I had a few flies in the cage. All of my snakes are CB so I highly doubt I would have got a parasite like that in my collection. I am really uptight about keeping their cages clean.
I didn't know that mite off was so toxic. It had good reviews online. I don't even know how they sell it if it's that damaging to snakes. I'm just putting it out there because I don't want what happened to me to happen to anyone else.
I am not going to euthanize my other snakes yet because I am not sure if the affects are permanent. I am getting mixed reviews online. I am going to give them a chance to recover as this just happened today. The only snake that survived was one of my hold backs from my squam x broadleyi clutch. It was a hybrid and the runt of the litter but it had really nice color so I kept it. It didn't seem to be affected at all. Everything else died or was severely injured. When I shook the tree branch he fell out and just crawled over the dead snakes. I have been keeping a close eye on him all night but he is alert and aggressive so he looks good so far. The other half of my collection was on the other end of the room and is fine.

I did not know they were all captive bredd. But i do use hotshot pest strips. They work great. I cut it into quater peices and put only 1 peice in the snake room and it works great. Never a problem. A few years ago I had a crotalus cerbeus. Some how it developed some bizar infection from a peice fo aslen splinter. The vet gave me some oily drops to rub into the wound. That sname had very similar neurological effect and never bounced back. And eventually died. I never used that vet, that medication, or bedding again. Did you contact the company. Although uunlikely it is also possible you got a bad batch of that mite spray.

In the pet store I used to work at we used to use mite off on all the snakes. We have used it on 100's of snakes, many different species. Never once did I see what you described in the years we used it. The product is designed to be sprayed directly on the snakes so I would find it hard to believe that's what would have caused the deaths unless the product was not used as it was designed.
Pulled directly from Zoo-meds website:
Controls mites in captive reptile collections. Mite Off contains colloids; small electrically charged molecules that can penetrate and disrupt simple organisms like mites. Completely non-toxic and safe for the water supply and environment (no EPA listed pesticide ingredients).
Additional Information:
Mite Off has no effect on vertebrate species and other complex organisms including humans, reptiles, dogs, cats, and plants.
Directions:
Spray evenly over entire body, legs, and tail. Make sure to spray skin folds, as this is where many mites will hide.
Throughly spray entire enclosure including substrate, rock heaters, cage furniture, etc.
If mites are observed on your reptile(s) after 48 hours from the initial treatment, they are most likely hours from the initial treatment, they are most likely dead and can be rinsed from the animal with water.
Reapply as necessary, but allow 3 days between treatments.
For snakes, lizards, and land tortoises only. Do not use on amphibians or arachnids.
Ingredients:
Active ingredients: sodium laurel sulfate 0.1% Inactive ingredients: water, carrot, corn oil, glycerin, guar gum, onion powder, orange pulp, soy bean oil, tallow, vanillin...99.9%

Also mentioned were some rhino bikers being affected. I know the animals may have been captive breed. Although all the Rihno vipers available for the last year or so have been farm breed and came in from Africa. It may be a disease that was passed to a captive animal you got. You never know what other people have in their collection. Diseases like Paromyxia (not sure if I spelled it right) are notorious to affecting vipers and pitvipers but less likely elapids. It may be a coincidence. Also Paromyxia could take a long time to manifest itself then just wipes everything out all at once. It's kind of like IBD in boas and pythons. Its hard to say. You just have to monitor the rest of your collection and see if only Your vipers are affected. But Joe is right. I worked in a pet store and we always used it. Right on the animals never a problem.

To be perfectly clear this is what I use:
http://www.lllreptile.com/products/391-provent-a-mite
It is called prevent a mite. My 2 rhino viper actually recovered and are doing fine and eating. The other snakes were all dead. Just to be clear the snakes didn't die from disease. 6 snakes don't just spontaneously die at once from a disease and none of my snakes have diseases. The prevent a mite is what killed. I took pictures of all the dead snakes and videos of the ones injured by the spray. None of them were sick. Prevent a mite is a dangerous toxic product do not use it.

Sorry about the mistake. I bought mite off and prevent a mite. The mite off I was suppose to spray on the snakes the prevent a mite I was to spray on the cages. I didn't spray the snakes with prevent a mite as they didn't have mites I only sprayed their cages with the prevent a mite to kill the bugs.

Was the prevent a mite that stuff in the light blue aresol with a black top? Also I believe you that your snakes were not sick. But with vipers there are diseases that are airborne and incubate a long time especially common with African snakes. One can buy a snake from someone who has a bug like Paromyxia and not know or see signs for sevral months. And yes once snakes get symptoms can all die right away. Thank God it obviously was not a disease. And thank god those rhino vipers bounced back. But I'm confused why did you treat with mite spray which is so stong for fruit flies. One would not treat roaches in the house with rat poison. Why not use those hanging fly tape rolls etc... Something less invasive?
