Can I upload a picture? What is this? I found a snake in the road still alive after the head got run over in the mountains of western North Carolina. It may be a timber rattlesnake that is missing its rattle. It is about 3 feet long. It has long fangs and pits on the triangular head. The color seems to be more consistent with a timber rattlesnake than a copperhead, but it has no rattle since either: 1) The tail got run over, or, 2) someone cut it off before I stopped to pick it up, which is unlikely given the road but possible. The underside of the tail looks undamaged, but it just doesn't look like the pictures I see of copperhead. I would like to upload or send pictures if possible.

Yes timber rattlesnake. Rattle could have been removed by person passing by or simply broke off while it was alive. Timber rattlesnakes can vary in appearance quite a bit throughout their range.
